1/4 0z Queen's Beast gold coinss hefty markup...

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting a few 1/4 oz Queen's Beast gold coins. However, the markup is around 30-15% depending on where I look to buy. Obviously, the Queen's Beast range has a premium but did everybody else bite the hefty markup or did you just buy enough quantity of 1/4 oz coins to reduce the markup?

Because of the hefty markup, I was just going to get a singular 1 oz Queen's Beast gold coin as it has a more reasonable markup of 4-7%.

I'm sure many others (much more 'expert' than I) who can advise you will chip in.

30% mark up is not outrageous on the bullion at the moment for a very good example imvho. This series is doing incredibly well, but there are an awful lot of duds that e.g. wouldn't be worth grading.

No idea where you are based, but I get the impression that the US did better than the UK for some reason on the raw bullion.

My only advice would be get the very best examples you can and be prepared to pay the premium. Only the very best - nothing less than an MS69 on bullion or a PF69.

Quite scratched neck. Those are the ones to avoid.

The Lion was the first one and has heavy markups already. Griffin is the same. Unicorn and Bull are cheaper but still carry a premium.

I'm from the UK, yeah seems the UK sites have a bigger spot markup than US sites, which is quite annoying.

I was looking to get from The Royal Mint so they aren't graded.

£300 is around a 20% markup over the spot of £245 per 1/4 oz. Also, I didn't notice till augur said about the slight scratching; was wondering why The Lion was going so cheap compared to the other markups I've seen(+50%).

Bullionbypost have them but I've no idea of the quality.

I swore off Bullionbypost after some horrendous 'Grade A' silver Brits (and I mean worst of the worst), but to be fair before that they always did me quite happily on gold - only a couple of scratches across 14 or so coins.

I'm just dipping the toe in the water with gold to be honest, they've been okay with me with silver but I haven't exactly bought a lot from them.  I like the queens beasts but I think I'll stick to silver for now - but then I may miss the boat - another quandary - just after I've sorted out my fractional gold.

Are you from the UK? Because I've looked at silver and the markup over spot was quite a lot, especially as there is VAT. Which is why I've been leaning towards Gold.

People buy from bullionbypost?

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

Sorry, to clarify, when I've bought from bullionbypost it has tended to be on e-bay.  I don't know how they work their margins, whether it's on an individual basis or average, I tend to use their main site as a comparator but I am relatively new to this.

I am from UK, from my limited knowledge, I think the VAT does screw up the comparison between silver and gold.

Ive got the one oz gold lion and griffin listed on ebay a lot cheaper than Bullionbypost and if i was to keep them i would get them graded

If they are grade worthy why not list them on here? You save the fees etc and if you more or less split the difference with the buyer you will both be happy.

Why would you get them graded?

Because good examples currently command a large premium over and above the grading fee.

They always did me proud on gold, no complaints whatsoever. It's only when they screwed me (on condition) on silver I stopped using them.

What's your bad experience with them on gold?

How much of a difference would you expect for a Griffin graded as ms69 and one as ms70 vs a bullion coin in capsule without any scuffs or scratches?

Probable twice as much for a ms70 than a ms69 i would of thought. From what i hear it very hard to get a ms70 with a bullion coin

I don't know mate - hopefully the experts will chime in.

If there are no scuffs or scratches at all and you are confident it'll grade well you would want to get it graded yourself to maximise its value imo. Otherwise someone else will be making the premium profit and not you. Also check the NGC and PCGS populations for MS70 - there are few!

I think that's optimistic for 70s, but there are probably folk who will pay that price for 70s (if you can find them) - they are very rare.

He must have seen your post, he reduced the price and added that there is scratching to the neck in the description.
