3000 Subscriber "Guess the Pennies" Competition - A Silver Forum Exclusive

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody, Backyard Bullion here!!!

OK - if the mod's feel this is in the wrong place please feel free to move it and accept my apologies in advance!

I have recently surpassed 3000 Subs on my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/backyardbullion

And to say thank you to all of the support this forum has given my channel, my hand poured silver business and generally for being an amazing place I am running a

Silver Forum exclusive competition

To win the contents of this giant jar of pennies!

The Rules

OK - so there are a few ground rules I wanted to cover.

1). You have to be a Silver Forum member to enter.

2). You have to guess an exact number of pennies, you cannot guess a range. In case anyone was feeling particularly clever the answer is NOT 3000, that would be far too easy!

3). Your entry has to be in the form of a comment on this thread and this thread only. If you message me with a guess it will not count.

4). One guess per person and nobody can guess the same number. Fist come first served on this thread only. I will monitor this and if you guess the same number as someone else I will let you know and we can change it.

5). Winner is the person who gets the exact number, or who is closest. In the event of a tie (two people equally close) then the pot is split.

6). The winner will get a choice of having the value of the jar paid by Banks Transfer or PayPal OR an equivalent value of my hand poured silver.

7). I will be judge and jury as to the rules of this competition and my decision is final. I also reserve the right to add/amend to these rules if I have forgotten something or not explained it very well!

8). Entries will be open until 12pm Sunday 29th April 2018 and the winner announced at 2pm Sunday 29th April.

I have counted an exact number of pennies that went into this jar and I have filmed the jar being filled to this exact number. I will release this next weekend so we can all see the winning number!

In the meantime here is a video of the jar and me explaining the above rules

And here are some photos of different angles to help you in your quest!

Can we have information on the jar dimensions or is that part of the game?

Nope - judge from photos and video only.

*Rolls sleeves up*

Right, I'm going to maths the hell put of this.

From observations, jar on my screen has a penny as 12.5mm and jar width of 90, height wise it's 8.5 for the penny and fill height of 53.2. Although perspective is probably screwing this a little. Punshing the numbers assuming a cylindrical space gives a volume of just over two litres.

Dividing volume of a penny by volume of shape gives me a total capacity for pennies of about 4,000. But that's for a solid block of copper. Obviously there's gaps.

Let's approximate down to two dimensions, the perfect packing ration for equal circles in an infinite plane is about 90%. But this plane is far from infinite and I'm not going to assume perfect packing factor. So let's assume double the gap volume of perfectly stacked pennies in an infinite plane.

Running the numbers my estimate is:

3,282

Incidentally I have another secret estimate that I'll reveal after the competition is over, to test a hypothesis :)

Feel free to PM me that hypothetical number ahead of time if you want, it wont count as a guess though ;)
