thinking of starting a run of 20 francs gold coins.    Am I right that they have about 18 designs?    How hard are they to find?  More of a stacker than collector so don’t want to go too far over spot.   Any tips of advice greatly received

I love the various 20 franc gold coins. After sovs they are my next favourite gold coin. I had a few before i sold them all a few years back. Now I'm back in the buying phase, I'll be picking a few more up myself. My gold dealer gets a few of these over the year, and I usually take them off his hands.

Bought 20 swiss francs this week. Was kind of "accident", saw it on auction going for 209€ so i bid 210€ and thought that it will rise before closing.

Well now 20 francs is on the way to me.

Dangerous, as now you'll want more LMU's to join it!!   But at least the Helvetia is one of the nicest coins

Wtf is this? Are they saying the seller can employ shill bidding? I wouldn’t buy from these people if this is how they run their actions.

I saw one going for less than usual on ebay at the weekend iirc but by the time the seller had replied with the postage charge I was asleep and missed a helvetia for well under the £200.

That's a pretty comprehensive list from @sixgunI've got about half of them and some of the others from the monetary union including 20 lira from the Vatican. At risk of being shunned by other forum members I'd say they were more interesting than Sovereigns :D

You won’t get shunned by me for saying what you have said....

Now that is a fine group of coins...and an interesting display of the different colours gold can be...a story for another day I hope 😂..

The different colours gold can display...

This is indeed an interesting topic and more prevalent in LMU or UML coins than e.g. sovereign or bullion gold.

Sometimes it has to do with the pickling: all coins below are 0.900 fine gold alloyed with silver

Left Chervonetz ("red coin"), middle and right 20 Mark; during the pickling the superficial copper is dissolved from the planchets using a strong acid (e.g. H2SO4). Depending on duration and strength of the acid the result can vary as seen above. And while it looks as if there were no UML coins on the picture, the 20 Mark are most likely made from French Francs (reparations from the Franco-Prussian War 1870).

The other options is to alter the gold tone more yellow is to use silver in the alloy as in the 1887 Jubilee Sovereigns. In the few years the Mint in Caracas was operating, Venezuela did exactly this with its gold coins.

the two left coins were minted in Paris and Bruxelles respectively and show the effect of pickling nicely while the two right Ines were minted in Caracas with gold from Guyana, the traces of arsenic in the gold give the greenish tint.

And here is the complete date run:

IMG_0898.thumb.JPG.4c05bc15af7ab13a5a509807ad7432ab.JPG

1879/1880 Monnaie de Bruxelles, 1886/1887/1888 Casa de Moneda Caracas

1904/1905/1910/1911/1912 Monnaie de Paris

1879/80 and 1904-12 are alloyed with copper and then pickled, 1886-88 are alloyed with silver and from locally sourced gold (Guyana)

The dies were always made by the Monnaie de Paris; while all coins are reeded, the reeding varies from mint to mint with a finer and slightly higher count in Bruxelles, more of a cogwheel reeding from Paris and a rather rough one from Caracas. (I haven't bothered counting)

Made some pictures today when I visited my coins in the Bank.

Very bad light in the basement so the pictures didn't come out very well. In real they look alot better.
