Price difference between Krause and NGC

Hi everyone.

I picked up this coin at the weekend and just flicking through the Krause catalogue to see a the value. All well and good. After I checked on ngc website and the prices have a crazy difference. Has anyone else noticed this with other coins? Ive seen it a few times now. Who can we trust. I often use the ngc app on my phone when out buying to give me an idea of prices. With discrepancies like this it is easy to get unstuck when buying.

NGC supposedly gets their prices from Krause I thought, or at least that's what they say on their world price guide.  That said, I've seen a couple of discrepancies like this, but not often.  Lately to be safe when when I'm buying I use these price guides as a reference but also try and look up recent auctions and sales of the same or similar coins to get an idea of what they've recently gone for in the local real world and estimate approximate value based on both of these factors- guide and sales.

As Publilius Syrus said, "Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it."

I could be/probably am wrong but I thought the NGC pricing shows is trending value more so than book value. Those are very different numbers; the value and how much people are actually willing to pay.

Also the 5th edition is very out of date for 1801-1900, so the pricing will be off by quite a bit. I have the 8th edition and it is from 2015.

I agree, I really just use the price guides to highlight which the key dates are. Krause and NGC can be very unreliable, particularly for world coins and the local annual price guide is a much better bet as are the realised auction prices as mentioned. Top grades can go for almost anything depending on the relative populations!
