Well, demonstrates how much the seller knows!!  As I said, a lesson learned! Thankfully, all the other purchases I’ve made on the forum have been good/excellent so perhaps my turn to get bitten on the bum😊😊  Tomorrow’s another day. I’ll get over it 👍👍

I think I might have upset a number of people today .  I was in Sheffield this morning on an errand and remembered that they had a coin auction on today down on the Chesterfield Rd.  Decided to call in with a view to picking up a couple of sovs if the prices they were going for were below spot of £1185.

I ended up getting a bit carried away.

All the 1966 ones (all the above except the last one) were already held on commission for £226 so no bargains to be had and a lot of people there were visibly upset about this as they were hoping to get them for low 220s.  Nearly every one of them sold for £227 in the room (online bidders were missing out because their click wasn't registering quick enough!) but a couple went for £226 (I got one - it's the last one shown above, a capsuled H&B as new) and a small number went for £229 and £230 online, but that put them over spot and they would have had an additional 5% online salesroom on top of that as well!  Crazy.  Doing a quick calc of my total paid + VAT & commission vs spot price of £1185, my total paid came to £58.40 under spot which I'm pretty happy with :) .

Speaking to the auctioneer, there are another 100x 1966 ones coming up in another auction there at the end of February sometime, but he did say those would be likely held on commission as well, although obviously no price is known yet as it will depend on what spot is closer to the day.

I don't understand... how do you get the prices so low? For example, at the moment BullionByPost pays £269 for sovereigns... that's a huge difference from the £226 - £229 you're talking about... those are early last year's prices... not this year's. Sorry, I'm confused...

EDIT: I see, you got a brilliant deal way under spot... wow!!! Lucky man.

Awesome! What I don't understand is why someone would sell these at auction? I get that once you pay VAT and fees etc you're paying close to spot, but why wouldn't the seller just walk into any dealer and sell them for close to spot without worrying about VAT etc? Eludes me lol

See the '125 sovereigns for sale' thread in the Gold forum.  I ran some numbers.
