As soon as I saw the coin it was obvious that it is not struck centrally on the planchet, now being a bit wet behind the ears still I am not sure if this indicates a forgery but I believe it does.

I weighed the coin and it was spot on but its definitely slightly thicker that my other halves, I rang Atkinsons and explained the above and they said return the coin for us to look at.

Just wanted to confirm with the assembled brains trust that is TSF that I am on the right track here.

Personally I would be concerned - or happy - if its genuine, you may have a valuable error. If its fake... well then... Ask them to check it, and if they say its genuine, get an appraisal.

@JunkBond

You are spot on.

I have a perverse interest in counterfeits and fakes.

It's probably best to return it but I could offer you an Edward '02 or '04 in exchange.

But not until May 3rd!

No problem JB.

In Atkinsons' defence, it will be gold and they did offer a refund.

It's now bagged up ready to go back.

Who can you trust, not Atkinsons it seems. :(

If its a jewellers copy done in the far east the gold content would be the same, but zero numi value (apart for those who collect such rarities).

Yeah and it wasn't a lucky dip, paid £169 based on year and condition, which by the way is very nice.

A beautiful 1850 Young Victoria Shieldback arrived today from an ebay auction. The condition was listed as AU+UNC. After receiving and studying the details, what would be thought to be a Marsh 33, Normal, looks to be a Marsh 33A, Inverted A for V in VICTORIA. Open to thoughts from everyone.

Flippin' eck...Gold (and Silver) rush!

This lovely little lot all arrived today, some of them belatedly due to the snow and postage delays.  But mightily surprised that the 2005 Britannia arrived in four days all the way from the South of France!  The Britannia 1/10's from eBay the Sovereign coins from Bullion dealers and thank you to @arshimo2012 for the 4 Emu's and  the 1kg of Belgium's finest Umicore 100g Bars.  Unfortunately, two of my boys took a fancy to the Emu's so only two left for me to stack!

They are crackers particularly the Shield but my favourite of this lot, is by far the 2005.  Two of them tucked up, I'll have to order some more capsules. Nice problem to have.

Nice! There was a 2002 in Hattons a few days ago. Not much of a premium compared to the best value but I hesitated and it went quickly!

Think the 2002 2005 2012 sovereign.s are going up in price quickly. The proof ones are expensive to I do like the 2005 best but all nice coins

Yeah seems to be. There’s a bunch of 2012 still in hattons but there were a lot more minted than 2002/2005.

goldsovereignexpert have a 2002 proof for £380 (no coa).  Not sure if that’s a good deal but judging by eBay about £450 for a proof seems resasonable

They've had them a while, I notice they've dropped the premium since I told them they were too expensive!:D probably coincidence but they are also loose coins rather than in mint plastic.

I bought my 2012 from Hattons, took advantage of the premium reduction.

I like the design of the 2012, trouble is in my opinion the bu lacks depth and definition, and I have seen several different coins to compare, I own some bu 2012 halfs and they are the same and appear more so than other bu Sovereign coins, but then it is bu not Proof.

I would like to hold a Proof in my hand to compare.

The premiums are high on all of 'special' years Sovereign, and demand for the Shield and 2005 is quite strong, hence my purchase.  I'm attempting to put together a date run of a dozen coins, 2000 onwards.
