  1. I started in August 2010, a couple of months after my first and only child was born. I don’t remember the two things being directly linked, but psychologically, they probably were. I had around £3,000 in a cash ISA, which I decided to do something more interesting with. My first purchase was a 1996 1 oz Kookaburra from eBay, for around £20. When it arrived in the post, I knew that I’d found a lifelong hobby. As it happens, August 2010 was pretty much in the middle of the bull market that culminated with the April 2011 high, crazy times. Since then, pretty much every spare penny I have (after household bills and treats have been paid) has gone into silver or gold, and a little bit of platinum. It’s basically a brilliant savings vehicle for me and ensures I always have funds available, if needed. My stack has also grown to the point that it will act as a pension pot in its own right. I do a similar thing with whisky.
  2. I got an NGC MS64 1918 India Sovereign for £20 less than my maximum bid, which is always a bonus.
  3. Yes, you would think he would have learned to let it lie by now, but apparently not.
  4. I’m aware of that and entirely disagree with the approach, but that doesn’t change the fact that the parties who are repeatedly relating this story, have their own agenda.
  5. It also needs to be pointed out that the people who constantly push these shill bidding stories are a couple of utter ‘terrible’ cans. They spend their days on Facebook groups slandering all manner of people, whilst being barely able to string together a coherent sentence. The target of these people is usually the same person, a high profile former member of this site, who has my implicit trust, despite the slightly acrimonious departure from the forum. Don’t let the modern trend for out and out paranoia, allow you to be misled by people who act out of jealousy and malice.
  6. The only new Queens Beasts coin appears to be a 5 kg gold, which probably won’t affect me.
  7. I remember this, but couldn’t bring myself to spend anything like a significant amount of money on the worst coin ever made.
  8. Generally, eBay completed sales are a very good indicator of price (not for this one yet).
  9. Looks like somebody’s spilt their dinner on it.
  10. It’s a tricky one. I was torn anyway, between keeping the set as it came, or grading everything, if they were in the right condition. Generally I don’t keep proof sets, I don’t have any others, so may yet decide to grade the 9 that are OK and just put the Griffin down to bad luck. Maybe try and acquire one down the line, as I’m sure other sets will be split.
  11. 9 out of 10 were OK, but not Griffin.
  12. 9 out of 10 were fine, but then came Griffin.
  13. My understanding is that they are melted. If sufficient numbers are returned, they will restrike and replace. If only a few are returned, they won’t bother restriking and will refund, meaning a lower mintage.
  14. ‘I wanted to be annoyed’…. is there a better phrase for modern times? 😄
  15. The lesser spotted 1/4 oz 2020 proof Libertad.
  16. I jump in and out, for the reason you give I think. They get a bit samey. I used to have a decent number of bullion sovereigns and sold them all, in favour of graded proof gold, as I love graded coins. I’m now in the process of building a graded sovereign collection, for keeps I think. The idea of being able to upgrade every now and then, keeps it interesting.
  17. I managed to get a bottle of the Redoubtable, but that’s my only one. Primarily a whisky man.
  18. Indeed, but the key is to identify the small percentage that won’t.
  19. The proof versions are collectible coins and therefore are limited in numbers. If they weren’t limited, they wouldn’t be as collectible. These coins aren’t a continuation of the QB series, regardless of what the RM has called them. They are stand-alone collectibles.
  20. I agree that there’s a place for collector pieces and I’ve been playing that game for many years - I just don’t see 10 oz bars, regardless of mintage, as part of that scene. With the exception of older Engelhard & JM stuff, no bars maintain significant premium long term.
  21. Have a case full of 10 oz bars - never paid a premium on any of them. I don’t understand the willingness to pay such large premiums for a bullion bar, even a pretty one. They’ll be the same price as all the others in 5 years time. However, each to their own and perhaps I can now sell my case full at £35/oz!
  22. These are perfect for stacking, assuming you can get them as cheaply as anything else. They have no collectibility value.
