Jvw got a reaction from Arganto in What is a popular coin to collect and complete date runs with?
Initially I only started stacking sovereigns. Then I made it a bit more interesting to find different years.
Date-runs are way more difficult to sell, way easier to split runs and sell individually.
I do it because it gives me a sense of 'completion'... <OCD-mode off>

Jvw got a reaction from Arganto in What is a popular coin to collect and complete date runs with?
Hi,
As some of you know I try and complete date runs of gold coins. I started many years ago with collecting different bullion sovereigns. In that bullion date run there are 140 different years when starting from 1838. The good thing is that there are just a handful of key dates and most are widely available.
I tried the Mexican 50 pesos next and then onto the 100 Peruvian soles. Both have limited years, but are very big and therefore expensive. Now I started the dutch gulden date run, which is a lot of fun and affordable!
I am interested what date runs you collect and what coins have some 'easy' and affordable date runs. Some coins run for tens of years making date runs very expensive. And then some coins have many key dates making date runs difficult to complete.
What do you guys think is an affordable coin and 'easy' to complete a date run with?
Love to hear about your date runs also.
Cheers,
J

I used to check the "UK for sale section" on the forum couple of times a day but since Brexit and the difficulty with importing gold and silver to Europe I never check the for sale section anymore. Way to painful to see all the goodies and not being able to buy them without also 'buying' heaps of trouble with customs. The Europe for sale section is kinda quiet (I hope that it will take off though!).
I do enjoy the forum for way more than the for sale sections though. Always good fun and interesting info on pm's.

How is this new? Didn't the Royal Mint already do that for years? Looking at some of the quality of the newly minted coins they sell and ship..........

up to 5 times a day ? lightweight 😂
Take for example, James...... he has a team so its monitored 24/7 and even employs athiests so he covers religious holidays...!!
I have the page open on my PC along with price charts and a couple of other dealer sites and check all the time when i am at my desk working...
I'll even come through and check between filling the kettle for a cup of tea and how long it takes to boil the water...

Evening all, just wondering how often everybody checks in to the forum on a daily basis for whatever reason. Personally, if memory serves me right, when I first joined the forum it was one maybe two times, but now I log in three, four, five times a day to check what's for sale. Is this about right or am I paranoid in case I miss a bargain.
Only a bit of light hearted fun, so be kind 😋 😃.
PS should have said, some of the general threads are hilarious.

Jvw reacted to dicker in Gold, What have you got most of?
Covered many times before but it is NEVER a pain to answer this questions- we all started somewhere once.
Go for low pct above spot. Sov or Brit work well. Cheaper in the forum then dealer if they are available but look at dealers none the less.
Sovs make the most sense and Gillicks hit the spot every time for me.
Best

Jvw reacted to dicker in Gillick Head Sov Price?
About right - suspect you may find easier to sell individually rather than as a date run.
Feel free to give me a shout if you are selling - I am always looking to upgrade my Gillick collection!
Cheers

Jvw reacted to dicker in 1919-P Gold Sovereign - Noticeably Yellow and High Gold Content
Many thanks for the photos and then analysis.
A pleasing yellow, caused by an oversupply of gold in the blanks is a nice problem to have. Much nicer than the horrible “copper pipe” finish that we see from the RM.

1919-P Gold Sovereign - Noticeably Yellow and High Gold Content
I saw photos of this before I got to see the actual coin. This was because a Chard staff member was concerned that it looked slightly too yellow.
We had Niton tested it to check, and the results for gold content were slightly higher than usual. Often this is a bad sign, or at least a flag that it is probably fake, and to exercise more caution.
Our photographer also commented "Unevenly spaced serrations on this one - triple checked count. That's probably a warning sign in itself, eh?"
Me: "Indeed, warning or alert, but might still be genuine", "I am happy this is genuine"
... and the obverse:
The Niton XRF Alloy Analysis:
Although the tester did not weigh it, I did 39.865 cts = 7.973 grams, which is very slightly below specification, but with normal expected range.
I did a quick retest which was consistent with the above, but I also noted GPND gold plating not detected.
Serration count 108 which is normal.
This sovereign is worth studying because of thje number of very slightly unusual features, but I believe it is within the production parameters and tolerances at the time, especially being Perth Mint. Possibly they had so much spare gold in the ground over there, that they were not as careful with it as the London Mint might have been.

This is what I have, I tried to look for others that sold but this forum has a pay wall ?

That is how it works, if you have time sell individually on here. Will make you a decent premium over what dealers pay you. Mind you, I do like trading with dealers, saves me the hassle and secures a quick and safe deal.

Having the bulk of my wee stack in one place is rare so I took the opportunity to take a few pics before they went on their merry way again.
