    Hello Everyone,
As my username suggests, I am a complete rookie looking to start investing in physical metals. Found the site via Backyard Bullion on Youtube. I hope to learn what the best approach is for someone resident in the UK to grow their investment with modest outlay and no experience. I am chomping at the proverbial bit to get my hands on some physical silver (really fancy a 1kg bar), but it seems, from my meagre research, that premiums are prohibitive for UK dwellers and that gold is the best course of action if I want to hold a physical metal? That being said, sales posts on here seem reasonable (thanks BYB for the help!), and it got me to thinking; What is a sensible % of premium on top of spot price for Ag, considering an investment time horizon of 10+ years?
Looking forward to learning more on here,
    All The Best.

    Hi all

Just wanted to say hi.  I’m new to pretty much all of this precious metal lark but started reading up on it a month or so ago and found it fascinating.  Hoping to learn a lot with a view to dipping my toe in the water with a few purchases.

Hope to speak with you all in the near future.

Another newbie here to make an introduction.
I've been collecting silver for around a year now, initially because I thought it would be a good long-term investment. However once I'd got my first few ounces, the lure of the shiny was too difficult to overcome, so nowadays I keep buying silver purely because I enjoy feeling like a medieval king with a chest full of treasure . I'm a big history fan, so I was collecting Roman coins before I got started on the silver bullion. My current favourite antique coin that I own is a Roman Dupondius from around 27BC (sadly, it's only made of brass...)
I've also recently added a shiny new half-sovereign to the collection - the first bit of gold I've ever bought. Will definitely be adding more at some point in the near future, along with more silver coins that have interesting or beautiful designs.

Hello everyone !! I am Manuel from Seville but I live in the UK, I love antique jewelry and I would like to learn how to date its age by its hallmarks, surely there is good information in this forum, with time I also hope to contribute.
     Kind regards,

    Good morning TSF.
I thought I would put a general post up first before I post the auction later today or tomorrow morning.
I will be running a "go fund me auction" for a page I set up in memory of my late brother (I will link all info below for more reference).
As many know I post sales of coin slides that I sell for CCT, he has generously said to me he will donate a slide and a 1 oz silver coin to the winner and all postage cost's covered by him.
A bit about the cause, my youngest brother passed away 2 weeks ago at the age of 33 with multi organ failure caused by heart failure, he found out about his condition in his mid 20's but got progressively worse over the last 3 years. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heart-failure/ this nhs link will give you more information on this horrible condition.
One of the main issues with this condition is fluid build up and you are very limited on the fluid you are aloud to have, he spent a lot of time on a ward for heart failure and the one thing he was aloud a lot of was ice (to help satisfy the thirst) but was an issue to try and get some, so he did start proceedings to get a ice machine on the ward for all the heart failure patients but sadly passed before he could do much more.
So in his memory I've been in constant contact with the ward and have set up a go fund me page to make his dream a reality. The link to the page is below.
    https://gofund.me/5cf9ca12
Thank you all for taking the time to read and hopefully take part in the auction when it goes live.
Both auctions are linked below for you to take a look at.
@ChrisSilver might it be possible to have a banner on the home page? If not that's okay.

I've got a few sovs but I'm interested in seeking a couple of the more rare type. My last purchase was a 1937 double sov and I have no intention of shifting it as I think it will hold its value more so than other high grade sovs.
Would anyone with better knowledge be wiling to share a handful of dates that I should look into for sovs (full, half, double etc..) that are have a good chance of appreciating within wide margins. My budget is anywhere between £1500 and £4k and I don't mind sinking all of it into one coin alone, or 2 or 3 if its worth it.
As an example, I was interested in a coin being auctioned recently. It was an 1844 half sov, 2nd highest grade at MS64 and valued £2.8k to £3.5k. It sold for £4.5k which was above my budget, but I quite like the idea of investing in something quite rare that might give me a reasonable return.

    Hi @Ukbullionfan
This would be a Herculean task and I suspect would need to be treated as a full time job.
So to give you an idea of the task my master (detailed) spreadsheet of all Sovereigns shows the following distribution.
The below is what is known according to Marsh plus my own updates of items missing or incorrect in Marsh.  New errors / over dates / over letters are discovered weekly and Marsh certainly does not contain all errors.
Equally, there will be varieties that have yet to be identified (but I think this will be a small number).
Some of the Low "R's" below can be sourced for ok prices, but they will be in poor condition. High "R's" are seriously expensive in any condition - some are essentially unobtainable.

Just a short message to introduce myself.
I took early retirement from work… life is too short!
I have recently become interested in all things silver. My savings aren’t doing anything in bank accounts so thought I’d dabble in buying/stacking silver.
First I bought a couple of tubes of Britannias from ‘BullionByPost’. Expensive, but beautiful. Then I bought a few Queens Beasts on ebay. I like the idea of collecting sets (must be from my childhood stamp collecting days).
I found this forum from subscribing to ‘Backyard Yard Bullion’. His YouTube videos were infectious and has just increased my ideal to buy beautiful, tangible pieces of silver.
I would welcome any advise and help in my quest to own beautiful coins and bars.
    Thanks

I definitely agree, however for me the PMs just feel slightly more stable and I don't mind the long haul. Also the conflicting information surrounding the viability of BC as a payment method, tends to put me off. Most of my money was in BC as the daddy. I'd definitely keep an eye on the latest information surrounding up and coming tech though. But for now the PMs get the nod, especially with the crash coming.

No matter what the premium is I can’t bring myself to buy the “Copper toned” post 2000 Sovereigns. Not only is the colour awful, the strike lacks definition.
Gillicks or earlier work every time for me!

As far as I understand it - and I still have my L plates on when it comes to Sovereigns - if you're stacking, go for cheapest over spot price (for gold) that you can get, condition isn't a big consideration... as long as they don't look like they have been chewed by a dog 😊 and even then, they'll be worth close to spot I'd say... 🤔
There are lots of Sovereigns that attract a premium, from 'as new' condition ones to sought after ones to proofs etc - the list is a long one - but I've settled on bullion Gillick Sovereigns for the time being, as I like the Obverse and they don't seem to be attracting a huge premium at the moment. They may become sought after in years to come, who knows, but they'll always be worth a Sovereign! and they're nice to look at... Plus there are only 10 to collect, as the portrait changed after those were minted, so possibly a good way to get started with a sovereign collection?
The 2022's are likely to be popular in the future, as it's celebrating the pretty rare occurrence of Her Maj's 70 year Reign!
I have a couple of different sizes of these, and have dipped my toe in the Graded coin scene with a half & Full 2022 Sovereign - hefty premium over bullion, but they seem to be holding their own so far...
And there's the 'Special years' - one year Reverse types (including the 2022 as it goes) so: 1989, 2002, 2005, 2012 & 2017 - may have missed some though.
I'm sure you'll get loads of excellent advice from the Forum Folks, but that's my tuppence worth for you - hope it helps! 👍

I am definitely in PM's for the long haul. My issue with BC was that I fear for its future in that it's not tangable. Nor are other forms of money but PMs are shiny and you can hold them. Therefore as a certified magpie I've cashed most of the BC out and bought PMs instead. 15-20 years is my plan. Although I haven't quite worked out the exit strategy yet 😉

What was your initial plan with crypto? I suggest stick to that!
For example; I am in PM's for the long haul. I have a plan when buying pm's. I also have an exit strategy and therefor I also have a go-to-guy when I need a quick sale or buy to adjust my stack a bit. I never sell much because i have a feeling that PM's will always rise in price in the long term. So i don't panic when PM's dip or rise. I just keep with my plan and therefor keep buying.

Because it is fun, keep us busy, we have a clear objective in buying coins we like...
Indeed, sometimes we are paying ridiculous premiums for a rare year or mint, we know exactly that the premium paid will not be ever recovered, but we keep doing this.🤗
The voice I hear is stuttering.
For example, I have already two date runs complete all years and mints for Franklin "Bell" half dollars and now I am building the third one.
Don't ask me why... The voice....
    Shussss!
