A UK penny is 20.3mm, a half sovereign is 19.33mm and a full sovereign 22.05mm.
Do you really think a purse or an airport X-ray tray with these coins in is going to get noticed?
    People don't notice - i know they don't notice.
Indeed i have to look at the coin's face to distinguish a 2 euro cent from a 5 euro cent even after years of using them. People don't notice.

I've got some bad news for you...
If the gold sovereigns in your stash are all penny sized, you should take another close look at them! 🙂

I agree with all the above comments about modern sovereigns though, that coppery look isn't great - 'rose gold' or whatever they like to term it, it just screams 9ct at me rather than 22ct.

I had the same idea in the beginning. I thought that an investment stack should be 9999 gold (or 999 silver).
Then I learned of the value of historical coins over bullion where fractionals are concerned.
Then I learned to love to actually handle my coins.
In the end I learned that it doesn't really matter so much.

Having said that, there is something to be said about a clear yellow colour of gold - nothing is like it.
There is alloyed gold that still keeps that lustre - everything that uses both silver and cooper for alloying.

It’s a common misconception that only pure gold is the right stuff to buy. You’ll soon learn 22ct is equally as good! If you don’t like modern sovereigns then older ones are more gold like on colour

I'm totally the opposite, I want coins that have a purpose other than being a just lump of gold. I avoid 24ct gold. So I guess it works out well as we'd not be in competition for the same material! 😁

When gold coins were in circulation they were alloyed with other metals to make them durable. Now most gold coins are minted for collectors and investment purposes , it seems logical to produce 24K only.  But the Royal mint sticks with the 200 year tradition of minting sovereigns in 22K gold. Rightly so . There are  Britannia's for those  who like their gold shiny and yellow .

Small brown penny sized coins (aka older sovereigns) look like pennies in airport X-ray scanner trays, in purses and pockets - no-one is interested in pennies so no questions are ever asked.
All that glisters is not gold - and all gold does not glister but it is still gold. Give it time and you will come to realise - gold is gold and that is what matters.

After selling my 20oz gold stack to finance a house deposit nearly 4 years ago I've just started my new stack!
3 krugs from HGM - caught a dip and got them for just below £1300 a piece. Which I was a bit quicker and could have got them for a little less but there you are 😉
Going by my past 'success' as I'm starting to buy again, I guess this is a good time to sell 😄

I think the families of some brides would kill you on the spot, certainly most would beat you the c**p out of you. Pacta sunt servanda. This is not specific to the precious metal market or the silver forum. If I was the seller, I'd give you negative feedback and warn every potential seller of you - and insist you pay.

You accidentally wrote it and then both agreed on it, and then even after that you’ve made the payment at the final agreed price of £450?
Doesn’t really read like it was an accident, it reads like you’ve changed your mind after the fact.
Dont go back on a deal that has been made and finalised. Reputation is everything on here, honour the deal you’ve made.

Personally I'm into coins not bars, not going into why again but what size you should go for depends on your (prospect) total gold stack. If it's going to be 10g and that's it and you are not going to buy on a regular basis from now on, I would go for option 2 unless you are too much put off by the higher costs, because I wouldn't like to have all my gold in just one piece which takes away the flexibility of selling only a part, at once. You could argue, this doesn't matter that much if it's only 10g anyway and it certainly also depends on what other assets you hold. For example if you have loads of silver, the argument made, plays  less a role.

If you can get options 2 and 3 for the same price as option 1, which you probably cannot,  then you'd be getting flexibility for free. Does that flexibility matter? do you intend to sell anytime soon and if so, would you like to sell in smaller quantities or sell it all in one go? Do you intend to buy more gold? Have you come across a bargain for these bars? In which case, is it a trustworthy source? Have you considered other products, coins perhaps?
Given a straight up choice, same price for all, I'd go option 2. Otherwise, I'd work out what is best price whilst comparing market value for each exact product. If none of the options are particularly good value compared to the going rate for them, then I'd probably choose something else entirely.
Bullion By Post / gold.co.uk do a refer a friend scheme. HGM sometimes, very rarely, sell bars at relatively low prices. I would need some reason to be drawn to bars which for me isn't happening right now, but I could change my mind in future.
You beat me to it. and worded it better 😂

I do not doubt they did sell this many,However
you can have an ebay listing, for say "woolly socks, 99p", sell a dozen, then change the listing to PM's
it keeps the same item number, watchers and items sold.
this is usually done to accrue "ranking points" and keeps the item near the top of the page
But can also be done to give an impression that it is a good deal

Not on eBay! 100x1g complete can be had for about £150 inc. P&P, indeed a very large premium. (6 sold, according to listing)
However, broken down and sold on, folk are paying £3 including 2nd class post (66p). (39 sold, according to listing).
A lot of envelopes to lick, but that's a further £1+/g mark up after postage.

I have offered a Sovereign to my dentist once, when I had a freshly bought Sovereign in my pocket but forgotten to take cash for the dentist, with me. He also declined and just said, just pay at your next visit.

Here is another international grade comparison with more detail and more countries:

    Go down to:

    and expand it.
However, as others have said, you'll find British coins graded according to NGC and PCGS, in the UK as well (possibly even mostly so?)
