Do people give gold as gifts? I'm looking to start this early for family members, instead of them wasting money they can have something to start out their journey. 
To start off I have chosen to give 1g gold bars
Would be great to hear everyones thoughts on this and if they do a similar thing

Do you mind?  I have 3 girlfriends at the moment - all are very happy with me! 
They all come with puncture repair kits, and I have to be careful that I dont blow them up too hard or they turn into men. They are very quiet , no bother, always put out and for sale for £129.99 in all well known adult emporiums! 

All my girlfriends get pearl necklaces and they dont cost me penny and they can have unlimted amount of them. They can shove off if they want any gold and silver from me though - its all mine mwhahahahh!

I don't want to sound negative.
But I would never give a 1 gram bar as a present, certainly not to somebody who is not yet common in the PM's world and also certainly not to somebody who is already active in the PM hobby.
So why not ?
In the first scenario, a person who is not yet in the PM hobby. A 1gr. bar is so small it looks like you are giving nothing. It also has no appeal and I think that a person will start stacking or collecting because of a 1gr bar is almost zero. And when the person will sell it, it will see what he/ she gets for it and not the massive premium you paid for it because the chance is also almost zero that he/ she will sell it second hand but rather go to the first shop they find and sell it for a bad price.
I would rather give a coin, yes a golden coin is much more expensive but if the price is too high, I would give one or more silver coins. They also have value but much more appeal and a bigger chance that the beauty of the coin will get the person interested in PM's.
 
The second scenario. You just pay too much premium on such a bar.

I have offered a Sovereign to my dentist once, when I had a freshly bought Sovereign in my pocket but forgotten to take cash for the dentist, with me. He also declined and just said, just pay at your next visit.

Rick Rule said in a recent interview that a bull market in the metals initially makes progress in gold when there is fear - but in the second half when there is greed, then silver surges ahead. 

Na no videos, I am guilty of being drawn into the inflation concept. I mainly hold fiat. Only a small portion is for pm's. As for keeping it simple, that was the old me, the new me sees what is going on around him and feel I need to make a change (somewhere).

As a coin dealer you just support the inclusion of ugly coin collectors to the community, otherwise they would be in a special class. Selling a William and Kate coin without laughing must be the Champions League of coin selling.

My local dealer has a sign in the window saying " WE BUY ANY SCRAP GOLD FOR MELTING ( Except Harry & Megan stuff ) " 🤣

I have got a George III and two Maria Theresa coins and I love them because there is no such thing as an ugly gold or silver coin - for as long as they don't mint one with the likeness of Frau Merkel.

But if you glued 63 together you would get an ounce...

No one here owns any gold. We all just love the pictures of the shiny metal.
 I would love to see how a gold coin really looks like but they are really pretty on those photos. 

I had to learn
to not overextend myself financially (I manage)
to not buy all the hot stuff ( I used to be a Perth Mint addict)
to have a budget for more playful purchases (keeping the itch in check)
 

I bought what I thought  1/10th cook island Au coin. Bought 2 infact from the same guy on eBay, anyway I listed one here and was alerted by Ash and one other individual about the coin and how it was not 1/10th gold but something ridiculously smaller then 1/10. Luckily for me I got my money back Minus the cost of SD postage but it was a great lesson learnt. The guy selling was not playing ball but eBay sided with me thankfully.
 

It's great to see the forum onto the fake metal market with "ebay yet again" and "another laughable seller" but has anyone never been bitten by a fake or even genuine but overpriced. I believe in the mantra "he who has never failed has not done anything". I started off buying "junk" for a long time and may well have some duds amongst the hundreds of 3 & 6d's but always thought I was pretty safe bet buying. Some of my first few purchases of really shiny were some eagles and prospectors were duds which I have always suspected, but I learned. It i sad to see the rip-offs but we all have to learn somehow. Anyone want to share experience of their learning curve. Keep up the good work!
