Blockhead reacted to Spyder in Ebay Authenticity Guarantee
I think this is good news from ebay.  Just received an email that from the 11 October any jewellery sold for more than £500, you can post directly to ebay who will authenticate and post on to buyer. Any returns goes the same way.  This will stop scammers posting back a Christmas card or a swapped item.
I wished they would include gold coins.
A step in the right direction and no extra charge to the seller

This series of photos shows the development of the temple design.
Up to 1991 there was no inner ring, like this

From 1992 to 1996 the temple and the writing shrunk to fit the inner ring.
This shows small date at the top (minted in Shanghai, slightly smaller mintage)
    and large date (Shenyang) below

From 1997 to 1999 there are two distinct typefaces. The wider non-serif large date (Shenyang) above.
And the slightly more common narrow small date (Shanghai) below.

2000 was a one off design with two finishes in the ring. The very scarce mirror, above, and still scarce frosted ring below.

2001 to 2004 has a smaller date within the now familiar borderless frosted ring, and in 2005 the font grew a bit, which is how the design has remained to the present.

Blockhead got a reaction from stefffana in Bullion being sold at insane prices on the Highstreet in the UK, who is buying it?
I know someone who worked at H&T for a short time and am as puzzled by their pricing as you. I also know the rates they paid for 9ct, 18ct and 22ct at the time (this was two years ago). (they paid the same for 24ct as 22ct). Absolute top whack they'd pay on 22ct was about £30 a gram and this when spot was mid to high £40s. Essentially if your coin or jewellery was in excellent condition you'd get scrap value, otherwise you'd get less. The rates didn't change regularly so it wasn't adjusting to the market. Silver was always 25p a gram.
He said there is high staff turnover and they get minimum wage. Testing is the acid kind as that's all the have in store so will be destructive, so only encourages poor condition items or desperate sellers who need cash instantly. Maybe that is factored into their pricing

As i get sucked more and more into this addictive hobby i always try to think of ways i can improve my own experience. One thing i couldn't find was a solid price history tracker with a simple UX/UI.
acsearch and Coinarchive are both very comprehensive but lack good UI and search features.
    Here is a screenshot:
It's very early pre-beta testing, so very limited coins and data sources, but already interesting to see the pricing history!
If anyone knows of other data sources please let me know below or PM.
The goal is to build this to a portfolio tracker with value of a collection, and changes, increase/decrease, based on current/historical market.
But a LONG way to go for that - will lilkly also only do Sovereigns initially, starting with graded only, etc. but any suggestions of coin listing strategy based on popularity also welcome.
We are testing with just special year modern sovereigns

What started off as a bit of fun, seems to have got quite a bit interest in me producing some of these. This is the 12 coaster designs I've settled on. I'm using different coasters to the original post as these aren't quite as white looking.

Each coaster is finished with a coat of tinted furniture wax. If there is enough interest in these then I will put up a sales post.

A reminder that I am still selling and making these gauges. Plenty have been sold.
These will also test the gold 1 and 2 Rand, 1/4oz Krugerrand and all 1/4oz Royal Mint gold coins for size and thickness.
These new MKII are slightly thicker.
    £15 posted.
Later this month, should be listing the 1oz silver coin gauge.

I enjoy collecting things and turning to coins and bars is a way to preserve some wealth or even make a small profit instead of hobby money going on things which will never recover much value if they were ever sold (some other things I collect will probably end up in the bin when I pass away).
I am never going to be wealthy but at least with gold and other PMs I have a better chance of preserving what little I do have spare.
I have probably 25 years left of working and feel that not only will cash lose more and more of its value during that time but people can have their bank accounts frozen or closed at an institution's whim these days, and not everyone who has that done to them is a divisive political figure. Some small businesses suffer this too.
Although often not practical as a direct means of payment gold and silver can be converted to cash if things continue down this odd and disturbing path.
