Back in early 2000's my cousin entered a computer weekly competition, First prize was £250, second prize was £100, he won one of the runner up prizes of a USB drive with 5 bitcoin worth £10.
You can only imagine the number of times he's ripped the house apart looking for that.

ATS should not be a problem - I have had no problem with them.
That said, I check carefully whatever I buy.

Be mindful that HMRC/state do also record online transactions (CONNECT system), that is being enhanced with AI technology. And also have visibility of the financial transaction/money movement. So not much different to having to show your passport - just they already have a copy of its content/picture.

A dealership may ask/record whether you're buying gold for someone else, even if so you might say no, and then later opt to privately sell that gold for 0% gain/loss on to another shortly thereafter. i.e. end up with gold bought in someone else's name and address/id, along with additional private sale/purchase/transfer records. For self insured/storage security reasons that might be good practice, no record of photo/id/address of where the gold might be being stored, but does leave the purchaser who used their ID to buy the gold potentially exposed to risks. Thinking along the lines of two brothers, one buys the gold using their ID/address, and then passes/sells that gold on to their brother who then stores it at their separate/different address. If HMRC have records of transactions/gold purchases stolen/lost and a thief visits the brother who purchased the gold in their name, opening the safe when a sharp pencil is held up to a loved ones eye would reveal a sale record/note ... no gold, sale proceeds ... spent, just a couple of grand in cash within the safe.
The UK has transitioned to where it cares little for citizens safety, more a case nowadays of buyer beware, the state gives illegal migrants more care/security than the population those illegal migrants mix into even though they may have past criminal records ...etc. Very much a case of having to best secure ones own safety/security. Call the Police and they might be able to book you in to attend in several days time, if at all. Or if they do attend they send out maybe a pair of barely five foot tall WPC's that can do little if confronted with a gang of six foot burly beasts.

We've seen a huge downward shift in premiums. Sovereigns only selling below spot or at a push, at spot. Ounces only selling significantly below spot, like 97%. Only things enjoying a premium are 1/10 oz and smaller but these are not flying. Sovereigns still seem to be king as long as they are priced right.
But as this new level for gold settles in, if it does, these premiums (premia?) are surely not sustainable

That microscope got some detail for you. I’ll take a look at the scales now

A double strike would be seen across the full coin, all of the details would be repeated. Because it's occurred across several characters having the same offset I would think it's a die fault, probably some type of hub doubling. There's not much info on die production for Sovereigns of this period so there's a bit of speculation involved based on more modern coin production.
    https://www.error-ref.com/doubled-dies/
Obverse and reverse dies wear at different rates and the obverse dies weren't numbered. It's possible that other 1872 die 90 reverse coins will have been produced with different obverse dies.

Whilst you can buy gadgets, do water tests, ping tests etc I would strongly advise that the first and most important test is via the Mk1 Eyeball.  Loupe, Microscope etc against reference coins and use a load of learning that you accumulate.

Good dealers like ATS won’t screw their reputation by selling you some counterfeit tat from a Turkish melt house, but it’s always worth checking without being paranoid about fakes from main dealers
You say you don’t buy P2P - you might want to just have a look at TSF vs dealers.  There are some v good dealers but equally I know several people here who have bought counterfeits from dealers you would think you might be able to trust.

Look in the mirror mate, you have two mk1 eyeballs just above your nose
@dicker means do your research, learn how to spot fakes just by looking at the coin under a loupe
I have recently bought a digital microscope, and while I got it to be able to confirm any variants that pass through my hands it is a great piece of kit and it was not super expensive - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00XNYXQHE?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
The below is the type of detail it captures, on this example I was trying to confirm whether the A's in GRATIA on a young head were partially barred

I have a couple of sets of scales but I find these the best - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BHRTJ8QM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also have these and they are adequate most of the time and are very portable https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08DNPPFPQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
The second set only seem to be accurate to .1 but I have had them a long time
