Pete got a reaction from FriedrichVonHayek in Help needed please - pricing on silver coins
Others may argue but once upon a time I believed silver proofs and proof sets would hold their premium.
Some highly sought after coins and sets just might, but when I noticed some of my stunning mirror finished proofs picked up the odd milk spot it was time to get rid.
I ended up dumping a lot of stunning proofs for little above regular bullion.
Worse were my certified Canadian Winter Olympics coins and boxed sets that barely broke spot.
I succeeded in obtaining better prices for boxed proof American Eagles but what you get depends entirely on who is buying at the time.
Prices can fluctuate widely so it's either take a chance and get rid or be very patient.
I nowadays avoid all proofs, priced with hefty premiums, both gold and silver even when they do look super with sharp features and great cameos.

I too would like to acquire this coin but only at a fair price.
The only supplier was in the USA and I regret not buying when the price was around $45 which at the time seemed rather expensive.
A USA pension fund ( or similar ) bought the entire production but there is a regular seller on eBay from the Channel Isles that drips them out at a ridiculously high price.
Another hard to find privy was the dog and some were selling ( even on this forum ) at around £100 before another tranche hit the dealers like Bullion by Post who priced at approx £35 each. Maybe the pig will turn up like the dog but I am not holding my breath.

There are risks with all investments and plenty of warnings.
When things are running smoothly and your portfolio is rising you can become smug, but without warning, something crashes knocking out all or most of your gains.
You must DIVERSIFY and spread your wealth into several different products.
Never place all your investments into the same basket as at some point you may be hit with a disaster that was not predicted.
There are few experts that get it right all the time so stick to well known products whilst checking fees which can have a big negative affect over time.
If you are a stacker then the general advice is not to have more than 20% of your total assets in PMs.
PMs are in the commodity class meaning high risk.
Everyone knows that high risk also translates to potentially high gains but also potentially high losses.
Another tip is never find yourself HAVING to sell.
PMs will fluctuate and you need to ensure you have cash or other funds in case you have the unexpected need for money.

Your 2002 set is a special golden jubilee edition and will have a premium on top. The others will sell a bit more than bullion does if in good nick, if you sell on here. @Pete sold some sets a few years ago and wished he had bought bullion originally (from dealers I believe) , even buying on secondary market.
As mentioned, dealers will slap a bit of a premium on non special year sets when selling on their and some people will still buy them. If you buy a normal release set direct from the royal mint you are putting a high premium straight down the toilet. (Unless gold itself rises by 50% etc)

Pete got a reaction from LemmyMcGregor in Types of coin capsules
There are several well known brands of clear capsules available and you basically get what you pay for.
If you have a precious ( not necessarily super expensive ) coin that you want to house in the best capsule then a direct fitting AirTite is the best.
They are more expensive than most and you should seek out a forum seller otherwise you will have to buy from the USA and shipping is very expensive unless you buy in bulk.
A nice feature is the edge quality, rounded and transparent making it difficult to see the junction between top and bottom so making it a great capsule to show off a coin.
Next best is Lighthouse / Leuchtturm superior rimless caps and you can buy these in boxes of 20.
They are a good quality and have a small thumb point to prise open - that's fine for some users but it is visible.
Then there are a range of decent quality caps that tend to have more noticeable or prominent small rims.
Finally the very inexpensive caps are good for just protecting your coins but they generally have rub marks and fine scratches on them when brand new, scratch very easily and dissolve / get cloudy if you try to clean them with some solvents like acetone.

Royal Mail Special Delivery will insure the contents to the price paid provided this can be proved in the event the package goes missing ( extremely unlikely ) - bank statement and copy of sales invoice will satisfy a claim.

Pete got a reaction from arphethean in Semi-numismatic coins - how do you decide what to buy?
In my early days of stacking I too thought collecting rarer coins, proofs etc all with a premium attached would be a good idea.
I was very pleased with most of my purchases at the time.
Years later I decided to get rid of these coins especially if they were boxed due to limited storage in safe places etc.
I was extremely disappointed in the prices I obtained and nothing like the premiums I imagined would be associated with some extremely low mintages.
I sold a lot of proof American Eagles, wishing I hadn't now seeing the prices, but you just don't know how some coins appreciate whilst others fall out of demand.
It is all about interest at the time and how long you are willing to wait to find a buyer.
My advice would be to stick to high quality coins that are slightly more expensive than regular bullion.
I just purchased the Perth Mint 2023 Swan which cost me £38 rather than say £24 for a bog-standard bullion coin.
That's the premium you may expect to pay for new issue limited issue quality coins.
Hopefully the premium remains embedded in the coin.

A good starting point is to look at Australian Perth Mint and Royal Australia Mint coins with limited - say 20,000 - issues.
They are a high quality coin, supplied in capsules and generally retain their premium.
As others say - buy what you like, but don't fall into the trap of believing a coin that you paid a small fortune for will sell at a profit in later years.

I am assuming that when you sell on eBay and they tell you the item has been paid for then by using the eBay system to post / ship you cannot go wrong.
You select the method of shipping leaving the automated created address etc to eBay.
Using a tracked service - I assume Royal Mail Special Delivery for high value items, then as you have not entered an address or made any alterations you cannot possibly be held responsible, so eBay would provide seller protection in full. So I believe.
