Hi guys, I've been a bit quiet recently, but have been logging on and following the gold monitoring thread trying to keep up, not that I understand much of it, but love the banter.
Took a nervous punt on three halves at the end of March at 1770, and then held my breath and pulled the trigger on three more at 1860 last week. Was excited yesterday, but still ok, even with the drop.
Regards all

Some happen with time
Some are based on truly classic numismatic coins that would be way out of budget for average collector to afford an original (i.e. great engravers series Una & Lion, Gothic Crown, Three Graces, Petition Crown)
Some based on aesthetic appeal 2014 Britannia
Some based on first in series 1987 silver proof Britannia (first in year and wasn't issued as a bullion coin
Some are just genuinely appreciated by the market & unexpected & different ie Queens Beasts Completer proofs
Some are just random ie The Kew Gardens 50p
Some are guaranteed to just not do well
ie Diversity built Britain 50p - laziest ever crystal maze awful design, box ticking exercise to appear woke
or The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe coin, that has neither a lion, witch or wardrobe on it 🙄

I would suggest to follow some of the wisdom from posts like the one from Paul (preceding this one). If you’re interested in silver, it doesn’t move too dramatically, I think up about 12% over last five years. Gold does better, but requires a bigger investment. Personally I’ve done ok on RM coins but I only buy historically significant issues - birth, death, coronations- and ones that are numismatically special like the great engravers. Low mintage helps if the design is good.
Having been a collector for many years I can tell you that you win some and lose some so choose wisely and try to beat the odds. There are plenty of people on this forum that can steer you in the right direction

Buy what you like. The Tudor Beasts get quite a slating off a lot of people, however I have been collecting the 1oz proof versions. These look great and at one coin every so often as they come out doesn’t break the bank. Meanwhile I try and just buy more gold🤔 whether these beasts will hold their value or not…. who knows, however, now there have been a few issued they do look good together 🤔🤔

The occasional coin will appreciate the vast majority won't

The 1/4 oz gold proofs have been priced insanely by the RM for several years, the resulting insane losses in the secondary market are therefore inevitable.
Most of my gold stack is made up of RM 1/4 oz proofs, all bought on the secondary market and the most ever I've paid (so far) is approximately £495 per coin for the set of reverse proof Queens Beasts.
I've said it on here several times before, but nobody should have been buying 1/4 oz proofs direct from the RM for the last few years.

Gold on the other hand?
1/4ozs are loosing insane money bar a few success story's.
1oz proofs are awful returns
2oz proofs do well sometimes, picking the winner is hard though.
Special occasion/reverse sovereigns do well over a 5-10 year period
The problem is the ever increasing RM release pricing is sucking all the wind out of the collectors market. It leaves buyers at a big disadvantage out the gate.

Most modern RM silver looses money I'm afraid.
There's the odd success story, una and the lion..three graces etc, but by in large your going to be selling at a loss on modern proof silver.
