1957 Sovereign. The first coins minted under Elizabeth II. Taken with a macro lens at close to 1:1 ratio.

    Hi all,
I'm a new collector from Australia in my mid forties. My interest in coins is relatively recent, and my introduction to them came via my dad.
During his working life my dad worked in banking at several branches around New South Wales. Turning 80 next year, he has seen a couple of changes to currency and even bigger changes to banking(don't get him started on online-banking), with the gold sovereign probably being his favourite coin. He talks about the 2 that he owned in his life, about how he (regrettably) cashed one in, and had the other set in a necklace which my older sister wears. He's a huge fan of QE2.
I suppose he has a more relevant back story than I do. I have always enjoyed collecting 'things' since I was little, and my own penchant for nostalgia means that coin collecting is a nice fit and a bug that I'm surprised didn't bite me a lot earlier. I'm a graphic designer by trade so I also like to have an opinion on the design of the coins. On some level though, I am probably just facilitating dad's hobby as much as my own. We're both getting a bit of a kick out of it and I think on a long enough timeline it won't cost as much as some other hobbies can. Put it this way, it's not keeping food off the family table. Yet.
I know they aren't to everyones taste, but I am a bit of a sucker for the idea of the SOTD sovereigns (the concept, more than the Matte BU strike). I/we have the Albert & Victoria 200s from 2019, which I was particularly interested in because my son (who share's my dad's name) was born in that year. I also recently ordered the 3 coin set for the Platinum Jubilee, but judging from what I've seen from other recipients, I'm expecting little more than a few coins dancing around freely in a mashed up cardboard box! Ha. Time will tell.
Thanks for all the advice / input I've been reading whilst a 'lurker'. I'm happy to be finally out of the shadows!
    All the best,
    S.

I am very taken with the original Britannia figure by Phillip Nathan, the classic, standing one with billowy robes. I think that it is a wonderful and rather lovely creation, and much better than some of the rather 'butch' female figures that appear on coins (exception made for 'Vreneli' on the Swiss 20 francs gold coin). I prefer it to the other modern versions of Britannia, though they may be rarer.  So, today I phoned him up to congratulate him on his achievement. (He has a small website with his other designs on display, all excellent in their different ways as it seems to me.) I think he was pleased, if a little surprised. He was very modest and said it was all a long time ago, which is true enough i.e. 1987 for the first actual coin. I asked if he had used a model for the figure, but he said that it was entirely his own imagining. I would guess from his voice that, like me, he is the wrong side of 70. We did not talk for long, especially as I had managed  to mistime my call for what was probably his lunch break. Talking to him in person adds a dimension to my necessarily very modest collection of the one ounce gold Britannias. Incidentally, I prefer the pre-2021 coins (especially the ones after 2015 with the new royal head) as I feel that the new security feature of a lock/trident fork detracts from the overall aesthetic appeal and may even be something of a gimmick since I have never heard of fake gold Britannias.

The first works nicely, the second not so much in my opinion. The third might be better if you focus to the front of the bar with a smaller aperture giving an in focus view of the entire top of the bar, I would also add more lighting to show more reflection and the glossy nature of the metal.

So I am new to this forum, but thought I'd share some pictures I took of the little silver I have which I am using in project currently at University.
In the photos I wanted to explore surface, light and reflections.
I know it's something different for the forum, but thought it would be cool to share my results

The money laundering excuse is just that. If it were truly about money laundering it would be focussing on big players and big player amounts. They don't want people playing outside of the monetary system and potentially avoiding tax, and by people I mean the average Joe or Jolene. Big business plays by different rules. Our American cousins have a bill attempting to pass that allows any transaction over $600 to be legally investigated. An unrealistic proposition but it highlights that governments are not there to serve you, they are there to take from you.
That being said if you transact within that system and 'they' really want to dig into your purchases 'they' will. If you trade with a registered business it's very easy, if you trade with an individual and use the banking system there are hurdles in the way for them but it's still quite doable.
If you want to remain as anonymous as possible think about your spending patterns and amounts. Think about whether the fiat goes to individuals or businesses. Don't talk to anyone IRL about PM. You will never be invisible unless you communicate via heavily encrypted means and meet in person to pay with cash or barter (even then it's not a foolproof method), but you can 'pull the hood up' so to speak.
Unless you're a baller with huge amounts and have dodged a tax or two it probably won't matter. But I understand your trepidation.
*I should add for the spooks and algos out there that I trade above board and use the banking system despite my feelings about it. I am a tax payer and have been since I was old enough to work. System still sucks though.

Is it the same if you buy a watch or take the family on holiday? 5000 seems a low threshold.

It's £5000 or more in one purchase or £10000 in one year.
