Sovsaver got a reaction from Griffo in Today I Received.....
Received this Aussie sixpence this morning, splashed out a tenner for it, pretty nice in the hand. There's some lustre on the reverse beneath the toning.

Sovsaver reacted to richatthecroft in Sixpence Monarch Type Set
Nearly there.
Each Monarch since the Inaugural Sixpence issue.
Notable absences is a Phillip & Mary Sixpence (substituted here with a Mary Groat) and also a William & Mary, neither of which I have been able to source an example I would be happy with, the former will be a difficult gap to fill. In terms of a Cromwell issue, I've resigned myself that it would be beyond my resources to ever acquire that Sixpence.
I will in time add a nice example Hammered Elizabeth I and a Charles II- and I would like to add Proof George III & George IV example's well as a Proof William IV issue.
What I've learnt: Sixpences are a difficult denomination to source in better grade! The House of Stuart, particularly the Charles I period is the most interesting in terms of Coinage and Types of coinage.
What I need to learn: to take time and have more patience in curating a collection of this type.
Hope you enjoy taking a look at these Sixpence Types as much as I have enjoyed collecting them.

Sovsaver got a reaction from Roy in A nice shilling for the missus
Omg, I can't believe it's taken 3 days! I set it up. To be honest I'd even take a sixpence for her, oh I hope she doesn't get an account any time soon.🫣

Looks very nice in the pictures, and in my opinion it doesn't look as if has been cleaned. Hard to know sometimes until you have the coin in hand.
These coins are nice pieces of history; the last (easily affordable) early milled silver shilling. One of these, and an 1816 new coinage George III shilling would make a nice pair of shillings in a collection. Decent examples of both coins are quite easy to find for reasonable money, although neither coin is going to increase massively in value. Just enjoy being their custodian for a while.

Then I found another one slightly lower price, better detail but patchy toning on the obverse, reverse looks very nice to my eye, even as good as EF. I'm not sure about that patchy toning, hard to say if it was cleaned then an attempt to artificially tone it, for my inexperienced eye anyway. I do like the detail though.

Well, for both of us really. We are going to slowly work on a collection of silver coins. We have considered maundy and shillings so far. Both of us are complete novices as far a silver coins go so of course at this stage we are looking at various coin dealer websites and gasping with delight at the unc examples but rejecting the eye watering prices.
Then I spotted this one, 1787 shilling with hearts. I don't have an up to date price guide, but used an online source. I believe the coin below to be getting on for aEF, reverse seems to have nice detail but the strike on the obverse seems a little weak maybe, or it's just down to contrast, not sure about that. What do you folks think about this one?

That looks very nice - it's better than the one I have. Mine is VF.
I recognise the website and the coin - the price is about right I would say, possibly a bit on the high side but it's a very decent coin and a really nice thing to have in hand. They are quite common though.

Recently picked one up from eBay, very nice detail but has a little bit of polish on the obverse behind the hair.
I have decided to concentrate on quality now, and purely Victoria halves and full sovs.
