  1. The closest I have got to a silver coin lately, a silver certificate from Suriname during World War II, I expect these are probably not exchangeable for silver any more
  2. Finally acquired a better Napoleon Premier Consul half franc - a while ago but stuck in the post! Completes my Napoleon 30 coin typeset, it only took nearly 20 years and 12 years for a graded version.
  3. The coin does look like it has been cleaned at some point but it also has scratches above Napoleon's head which I think would make it 'details'
  4. Answer is that the PCGS coin is AU53 and the NGC coin is AU55, I would probably have given the PCGS coin XF details. Motto is buy the coin and not the holder and I can't tell the difference between a 69 and a 70, unless it should be 67 and 70
  5. As a long time collector of Napoleonic Coins the 1807A African Head 2 Franc piece is one of the key coins. Below are two examples - one graded by PCGS and one graded by NGC - anyone want to guess the grades?? No 70's to worry about here!
  6. First coin in quite a while as I have been buying banknotes Another Napoleon 1808A 10 centimes - this time the rare one struck 'en medaille' rather than the usual coin alignment
  7. I hope you all can help - we have been having a clear out and found cigarette case - 1946 Birmingham Sterling silver? H and M? Thanks
  8. Book celebrating 50 years of the Kunker auction house, very impressive. not only with all the history but with details of lots of the major collections - I think it will take a while to go through it 🙂
  9. Adjustment marks are very common on the Napoleonic Italian coinage, particularly on the gold issues and I have a few although I try and buy examples where this isn't too bad, 'correct' coins often command a hefty premium. You are correct in this was Napoleon's attempt to standarise the coinage across Europe and it just highlighted the challenges in doing this for mints which were used to striking other denominations. It was about 50 years, from 1865, before the LMU had a more successful attempt, again using the French coinage as a basis. The latest incarnation being the Euro
  10. Great coins - the 1812M 40 Lire is the 1812 with the 2nd 1/0 variety. Such overdates are very common on the coinage of Napoleonic Italy - quality control was a shambles, even compared to some of the mints today.
  11. Found a big chunk of Napoleonic copper hiding in a box - high relief is not a new thing
  12. Almost the Three Graces, - not in gold, not in silver, not even in copper - but in paper!😊 I have been after this note for a while - most of them that I have seen have a dirty great printers stamp on top of the lovely ladies! Apologies for putting a banknote on a coin forum 😝
  13. I'm now wondering whether I got the single lot I put a pre-bid on!
  14. Another piece of gold from Napoleonic Italy - this time 1811M 20 Lire
  15. Managed to upgrade my VF 1815 '100 days' Napoleonic 5 francs from the common Paris mint (A mint mark). Not only to a better quality coin but also to the more scarce Toulouse mint (M mint mark)
  16. Finally got a Napoleonic issue from the Rome mint - 1813 gold 20 francs
  17. Yet another piece of Napoleonic silver - this time Italian 1811M 2 Lire - much better than the grade suggests, clean fields and lots of lustre. Might have regraded!
  18. Spot on!👍 Although 1882 is the most common date by far it exists in 2 types of gold - gold and red gold. There is also a rare variety of 1/1 in the date - my coin is the even rarer variety of 1 over an inverted 1🙂
  19. Another Umberto 20 Lire - I already have the key date (1884) in the series and didn't plan on any more, anyone want to guess why I bought this one?
  20. An 1884R 20 Lire of Umberto I, so I have also put this on the LMU thread.
  21. OK, I gave in and bought a LMU coin. I know I usually buy Napoleonic coins but this appeared and I got it for a good price given the date - one for the pension.☺️ I just have to not buy any more!
