I wouldn't see anything suspicious here, but from pictures it's hard to tell for sure.
Maybe your relative should see a jeweller or coin dealer for a physical analysis.

It's important to distinguish the differences between bullion, BU (brilliant Uncirculated) and Proof. Bullion and BU are often used interchangeably and therefore assumed that they are the same thing which isn't the case, the number of strikes, creation of the dies, the time taken on the full process is very different:
Bullion - 1 strike and machine finished. NGC grading designation MS
BU (brilliant Uncirculated) - 2 strikes and hand finished. NGC grading designation MS and usually followed by an additional description to differentiate from bullion coins eg MATTE or DPL (deep proof like)
Proof - 6 strikes and hand finished. NGC designation PF
Here's a link on the Royal Mint's site that summaries the differences in a little more detail than above:
    https://www.royalmint.com/discover/coin-collecting/striking-standards/
Here's a video produced by the Royal Mint that goes deeper into the differences in the creation process between the 3. Only 5 minutes long and very informative:

It is possible that the RM will not supply the card packaging to dealers, so that they retain a premium priced monopoly.
Minimum order quantities also cause problems.
I / we would be happy to buy 10,000 sovereigns, we are reluctant to buy 500 x quarters, halves and doubles.
You could try asking Customs for some compensation for your admin time, or send them a bill for €50, you never know!

Perhaps we should offer a gold plating service!
I am only joking, because even though they would look better, it would desecrate the virginity of the coin, so to speak.

xthomasx reacted to GoldDiggerDave in MATTE? PROOF?
    Hi JJH
Normally the dies are sandblasted to give the coin the matte granular finish. This technique was adopted by a number of mints around the start of the 1900's.  In 1902 Matte proof currency set was made in the UK, and also around this time 1908 the US mints experimented with the same technique of striking the coins with an un polished die and then sandblasting the the die between strikes. The appearance of the coin can be altered by the fineness of the sand grains used.
This is where I feel the RM has quality issues with modern matte coins, they are struck with unpolished dies but they are not sand blasted after every strike (I can understand why as this would be very labour intensive and would produce a much lower strike per hour)  This is easy to see where the sandblasting is not 100% consistent and degrades very quickly between strikes and can give the coin what I call a  "dotty"  finish.
Some sovereigns where produced as a matte finish as  specimen coins for the purpose of reference photography, as they were easier to photograph without reflecting the light. The 1937 Matte proof for example.
I've also seen satin coins that have a beautiful lustre to the appearance of the coin.  Not produced or referenced as "satin" there are some 1960's Sovereigns with an attractive satin finish to the appearance of the coin, this is possibly due the alloy used, something I'm currently investigating.
    Cheers
    Dave

The RM also released a 3-coin celebration set containing a 1926 Sovereign (QE II’s birth year), a 1957 Sovereign (first bullion Sovereign of QE II’s reign), and this SotD Sovereign.
There were 100 of these sets.

    - stop making unprofitable purchases at auctions 🤦‍♂️
    - only buy gold at max 5% premium
    - complete the Gillick sov registry set (missing '59 and '64)
    - fund any additions to stack by selling existing items (ideally for profit, lol)

My guess (and its only a guess) is that when we see these bullion coins for sale they are as a result of people liquidating their assets which are held at the RM.
This may make it more likely that you will get a coin in decent condition I would think!

I like it, weird denomination but I find that a fun quirk. Not sure why there's a lynx on it if it's spains first bullion coin, I'd have thought something like the sagrada familia, a monarch, a bull or possibly a brit being sick after 10 pints of San Miguel may be an image more representative of the country?

1987 - 1990 are shown in the above photo. The two on top are Coin Show Commemorative Pandas. 1987 NY platinum and 1988 Basel gold with an error Pt die designation (no Pt were issued for Basel).

xthomasx reacted to Shinus73 in eBay Selling - Be Careful Out There
I’m a long time seller on eBay, almost 20 years. First few years buying and selling vinyl and the last 12 years or so, the same thing with coins.
Never been on the end of an attempted sting until very recently, but it’s happened twice in the last month.
First occasion, a £5,000 coin took the interest of a buyer in Japan. However, as the Global Shipping Program no longer ships to Japan, and I am unwilling to take the risk of shipping overseas independently, the sale could not proceed.
The interested party then informed me that they have an address in the UK and would I ship there. I agreed, as long as the address was first registered as an official eBay shipping address on his account. Once this had happened we processed with the sale.
Only at this stage did I realise that the address wasn’t on the UK mainland, but on Guernsey (my bad). This worried me a great deal, as it involved a customs declaration which I had wanted to avoid, but the item duly arrived after several days delay with the taxman.
Fast forward a week and the fun begins. I received a message from the buyer stating that although the item had arrived, the courier he had intended to use for the next leg to Japan, was no longer willing to carry the shipment, and they wanted to return the coin and have me send it to an alternative address.
This would have invalidated my eBay seller protection, so I ignored the message and waited for a refund request which never came.
My conclusion is that the buyer was simply chancing his arm in the hope that I was naïve enough to do as he asked. Eight weeks later, the buyer is still sending me messages with the same request, which I continue to ignore and will report when I find the time.
Second occasion, today, a buyer opened a refund request (£400) claiming the item had not arrived.
Alarm bells immediately rang for me, as this coin was shipped 13 days ago, one day before the 14 day returns period ends. Nobody waits 13 days to report a £400 coin that hasn’t arrived, when they know it’s been shipped Special Delivery.
The pertinent point here is that I had not completed the tracking details on eBay.
The buyer has waited as long as possible before opening the case, in the hope that I no longer have the tracking details and therefore, have no way to prove that the item was delivered.
Five minutes after uploading the tracking details complete with signature, the buyer sent me a message to say he’d made a mistake and had intended to open a case on a different item. Another chancer.
You have to understand the rules before selling anything of value on eBay. Be careful and always keep your tracking details.
