xthomasx reacted to GoldDiggerDave in Zimbabwe to Issue Gold Coins "RBZ Introduces Gold Coins As Store of Value"
@dicker thanks for the link. They think they have it bad when we get to the stage where our own currency is worth less then the blogroll it buys we will have to use harsh polymer notes on our backside. They need to thank themselves lucky as once the currency is worthless it still has a practical secondary use.

xthomasx got a reaction from Chrisplym in 2022 Ukrainian Archangels
It seems the 1 oz denomination is on their list of planned coinage for 2022 but there is no date of issue, and I have no idea what's the progress at the moment. It would be a good idea if foreign mints would go for it.

xthomasx reacted to AgCoyote in 2022 Ukrainian Archangels
Obviously the circumstances are tough in Ukraine these days. Does anyone know if this coin will be minted this year? I think it'd be a great gesture if the Royal Mint, US Mint, Royal Canadian Mint or Perth Mint minted these coins if the Ukrainians are unable to do so.

xthomasx got a reaction from Abyss in 1000+ sovereign 'smuggle' busted
1000+ sovereigns smuggle busted in Israel. Three fellows tried to avoid VAT on their investment. Yes, Israel requires 17% VAT on gold imports and local sales. Was wondering how many of the sovereigns are genuine, and how many are Levantine look-alikes. Would be interesting, too, to check for rare years and more...

xthomasx reacted to LawrenceChard in 1911 Gold Sovereigns New Variety and Different Edge Serration Count - London and Perth Mints
I recently checked a small number of 1911 sovereigns which @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer were buying in.
The owner / vendor had labelled some of them as "Hollow Neck", and some as "Rounded Neck". I see all sorts of weird descriptions about coins, but I thought it sensible to take a closer look; I still have plenty to learn.
Sure enough, among the half dozen London Mint coins, there was a distinct difference in the engraving of the neck.
I pondered the possibility that the difference may have been due to weak striking, but discounted that, and believe that there are in fact distinct differences between the two types.
Here are photos:
As can be clearly seen, the upper coin has a distinct hollow running downwards near the back of the neck, while the lower coin is almost rounded in the same area.
Both reverses appear to be slightly weakly struck, which is quite common.
As you can see, we also did a serration count, but both are the same - 110 (see later).
Above is a full size photo of the hollow neck variety.
While this (above) one has a rounded neck.
These variations do not appear to be listed in Spink or Marsh.
As it happens, there was also a 1911 Perth Mint sovereign in the lot, and we also did an edge serration count, with a surprising result:
This 1911-P has 124 serrations!
It looks like we will be doing more serration counts in the near future.
It is interesting and exciting to make discoveries which have been hiding in full view under people's noses for more than a century.

xthomasx got a reaction from CollectForFun in Auctions Including Fake or Highly Suspect Gold Sovereigns
I had another case in January. WAG (an auction house where I am bidding quite a lot) had this lot of sovereigns, including 1918 and 1919 without mintmarks:

I notified the auction house, and the lot was withdrawn very fast.
Now, three months and three auctions later, the 1919 piece (or a very similar one; with the same *really* big second 9) was auctioned off as part of another lot, and sold:

xthomasx reacted to LawrenceChard in Is a Half Proof Sovereign an Oxymoron?
It's not just search engines.
Look at national newpapers, full of typos, spelling errors, grammatical errors, syntax errors, factual errors, fake news, propaganda...
I shouldn't be too critical of them, their infinite number of chimpanzees do get a lot right, especially considering they are paid peanuts.

My advice is do not do it.
Keep the coin in the capsule and place the capsule in the flip.
That's my method when sending coins for grading.
