Goldfinga got a reaction from Kookaburracollector in Pocket Watches
Oh my word..that is some collection my friend..incredible. I know a little bit about them...not that much really but I know people that fix them and that used to deal in them a few years back. I used to own a couple myself but sold most of them.

Hi
Just enquiring if there is anyone out there, that is knowledgeable about 19th and 20th century pocket watches.!
A very close relative of mine has recently passed away, and I’ve inherited a huge quantity of them..just looking to find out more about them really…to show some respect for the lovely gent that has bequeathed them to me.
This is just a small fraction of them…
PM preferred on this one.

I don't think so, not really seen much evidence of this in the 7 years I've been here.
As a new member it's sensible to keep your head down for a while until you assimilate the general tone of the established banter. It pays not to be too sensitive, there are a lot of quick "jokey" comments on here; some funny but many can come accross as short or sarcy. The forum medium lends itself to comments being misunderstood. I know, I have typed a few in my time😉

Goldfinga reacted to BackyardBullion in CGT on gold proof coins-private sales
The following is not formal tax advice. This is just my own understanding of the rules. Please seek professional advice if any of what I say does not make sense.
If the total profits from your capital gains is less than your annual allowance then you don't have to even report it or record it on your tax return.
Personal allowances are £12,300 per person.
If you are married assets can just be gifted to a spouse thereby making a married couples allowance £24,600
Remember, this is PROFIT allowance.
Any UK coin by the royal mint is CGT exempt so you don't even include it in the calculations.
Example.
You sell a gothic crown and make £10,000 profit, this does not count at all.
You sell a 100 oz gold bar and make £10,000 profit, this counts but if this is all of your gains in one year it doesn't need to even be reported.
Let's say you sell a second 100 oz gold bar for another £10,000 profit.
Your total profit is £20,000
You will need to declare this on your tax return.
You will pay tax on the £7,700 that is over the threshold (rate depends on your income tax status).
If you were married, that second bar could be your partners allowance. So neither of you need to declare as each of you have only made £10,000 profit.

Whilst I get the direction your comment is Going in, I'm going to play devil's advocate and say "flippers" play their part in this mad old journey we are on!
Sometimes their actions can work in our favour and drive price upwards?
Without secondary sellers then certain collectors wouldn't stand a chance in hell in acquiring their desired coin.
Lastly and most importantly (90%) of us are flippers on some level deep down and we all have a price?
Whilst I've every intention of making the set and holding long-term, I'm more than honest enough to admit that if someone offered me an obscene amount compared to rrp then not only would they get my crown ....I'd wrap it in silk for them lol.
My point is....being angry because someone else is trying to improve the quality of their or family's life even for a short while is pointless.
Live and let live I say.

Also, now that I see the pictures of the reverse and obverse, I’m glad they didn’t do a gothic portrait of QE II.
Yes it looks cool and all on the Alderney version, but to me, numismatically and historically it has no significance, and I think it would take away from William Wyon’s Queen Victoria gothic portrait, which is really the main point of this release.
To me it would be akin to having a portrait of QE II in a veil because she’s a widow - I know this was suggested but it never made sense to me to try and mirror QV’s portraits on QE II.
IMO QV’s portraits tell their own story of her life and times (gothic portrait included).
That’s just my opinion anyway.

I was on RM site for half8, patiently waited, did it all by the book. At 9am I was placed circa 1600 in the queue.
I wanted the 5oz silver but would have been happy with the 2oz.
By 9:30 it was obvious I wasn't going to get the 5oz, but I stayed on for the 2oz. I was still around 400 in the queue when people started to say it was a sell out.
Not my day for silver.
I did treat myself to a 1984 sov (birth year). So all things considered, I'll go to bed happy.
Let's be honest, the fact we are all in the position to even contemplate spending these kinds of sums on coins, means we must doing something right!
Well done to the lucky ones today. I'll look forward to your photos!

I was not able to get the 2oz gold and the secondary market seems to be a bit too much for my liking. I thought that the impact of the sales prices being acheived for the Three Graces would lead to a more realistic secondary market for the gold, but clearly not - the Gothic is likely to be in Una territory, I think.
I am just going to sell the silver I got (including the Alderney version) and move on as I'm not really wanting to keep them without their gold brother. Having the Unas and the 3Gs is enough for me I think. Especially with the original Gothic Crown next to them in the safe box! Feel sad saying this, but it is what it is. My OCD is breaking my heart today!!

I get the feeling this coin is going to be very difficult to get. I have managed to buy most if not all coins I have really wanted to date.
I might be completely wrong but I think the Internet might break tomorrow, and I will get nadda. It feels different, perhaps its only as I have been waiting for this for a good while.
Best of luck everyone 👍

Agreed, just about every thread ive read has talked about this release at some point even if completely off topic.
I think we’ve had a mixed year really in terms of all modern coins, but im hoping this release will put it back on track and settle the uncertainty a bit. The Una was a well know and recognised coin before and has done amazingly well, the three graces is now, because of the series, but prior to that it wasn’t really a well known or loved coin (seems weird now, but 3G was a true pattern not common or well known), the Gothic Crown on the other hand is obviously extremely well known and loved, so even though the mintages may be a bit higher, the demand will be there I think and perhaps people will be less willing to let it go for a quick profit which will push the desirability and value up quickly. If people do flip quick en masse then the rise will be slower but will ultimately get to the same point whatever that is I think.
Im still not convinced a 2 coin set was a good idea but lets see. My expectation Is that the gold coins that do come to market will be one or the other and will sit quite separately and have their own value and following. Thats the case on every set ever produced in the past anyway, but granted this is a bit different.
good luck everyone, its going to be a lovely coin whatever you get!

I'm surprised by the lack of love these have gotten, I know coins are everyone's focus but they are really lovely.
One of these bars was actually in my first ever gold order from the mint along with a brittania and a qb completer, I knew nothing about numismatics and had no intention of becoming a collector I just had a notion to buy some gold for a rainy day/emergency and picked the 3 nicest looking 1oz items....its amazing how quickly you get sucked in though, 9 months later I've spent way too much, read way too much and became a bit obsessed.
Could be worse I suppose, imagine I'd decided to buy crack instead and make that my new hobby

Goldfinga reacted to AuricGoldfinger in The Royal Tudor Beasts - Royal Mint Launch Event, Oct 7
If you think about the queens beasts the lion was the first and is one of the most popular designs ever. As a first design to a series i think this coin is lacking. I think thats why there’s still gold proofs available. If i do get one it will be gold bullion so will avoid the hype for now but will be a potential gainer should the series gain traction
