As something of a Japan weeb myself, I find these fascinating!
Though I'm on the hunt for gold myself right now. But I wanted to show some enthusiasm.
I should go look up mintage stats. Were these ones acquired direct from Japan Mint?

I recently read George Orwell's "Keep The Aspidistra Flying" in which the main character frequently laments the shame of paying for anything in those tiny threepence coins. The ambitious but starving artist usually throws them away rather than have the gall of passing them off as currency!

Jay2 reacted to stefffana in Silver spoons (0,800) melt down or trade for Silver bar (999)
    Hi, @DutchSilverFinder.
The real market value for these spoons is exactly how much the customers will be happy to pay for them. You have been lucky to accumulate them at a very good price, probably from people who didn't knew exactly what they are selling.
These odd spoons, not being complete sets, are selling usually on the private market @spot value or at dealers @10%-15% under spot.
My advice is to sell them on forum, Ebay or Marketplace at spot in bulk. Try to clean them a little, make some nice pictures showing hallmarks and weights, describe them accurately and will sell easy at spot. With the money raised, you can buy some good coins/bar .999 silver.

Melting them is not a good option. You will obtain a bar with an uncertain finesse, impossible to sell. Refining silver is not a DIY/hobby activity. It is dangerous, involving acids and very corrosive chemicals and it is illegal to do it without proper training and authorizations.

    All the best!
    Stefan.

I drew this to help figure out spot price. It's in grams not ounces as these are very small items.

The first two columns are the official weight of the coins when new, the second two are the weight of pure silver. Both of course assume zero wear, as there can be considerable wear it becomes a small built-in 'premium'.

Also, the excellent website Numista gives you the silver content of almost any coin in the world.

    Modern British silver coins issued:
1816-1919 (plus a few from 1920) are 92.5% sterling silver.
    1920-1946 are 50% silver.
The cheapest (but not very compact) way to buy British pre-decimal silver is to purchase halfcrowns and florins issued from 1920-1946. The earlier dates will be pretty worn, the war years dates of the 1940s can be pretty close to AU times. Being only 50% though they take up a lot of room.
If you want sterlings then George V 1911-1919 half crowns are the way to go. Possibly also Edward VII florins and Victoria Jubilee head crowns and shillings - anything dated 1887 is affordable.

Thanks, Pengiun. Yeah I saw the template and advice page, but was interested in a fellow first-time auctioneer's first impressions. Good luck with finalising it and any future sales.

    Hi @Jay2
my experience is very limited. but my auction seems to have worked out fine. I posted coin yesterday.
I used template (made by site host ChrisSilver
) and then tweaked it slightly for my auction. Seems good.
And you have to pick from selling to UK and/or other regions, and pick whether you are selling bullion or graded collectibles etc.
If you have more specific questions I will try to help but you might be better asking a more experienced user.
    Good luck mate. regards, P

I used to gather up all I could of these little pieces of history!
At some point I could no longer lift the treasure chest they were stored in, and decided I had better move on to something more manageable for now.
Still a very accessible way to keep and enjoy silver, though. Good luck with sales.

There were 100000 minted of each of the 47 Japanese Prefectures. So 47 million coins were produced in total. I have 32 of the prefectures in my set and around 11 or 12 extras.
I got them all from Italy over the last 5 years or so.

Hi Penguin, I've been thinking of running my first auction here soon too.
Wondering if you had any first time experiences to pass on, other than the initial auction length being long?
I'll probably offer to post first when I do one ~ if the winner has a decent amount of forum usage or any purchase feedback at all.

Welcome aboard TSF.   The time IMO for 1 coin 7 days is a little on the long side.
Some flash auctions drop about 5pm and finish at 9pm and the do get loads of traffic.  Once you get a few people buying on your auctions you can tag them in at the start ie, @Darr3nG @James32 @Solachesis  @Fenlander1  @NGMD........Oh and if you get really desperate you can tag @HerefordBullyun
£15.50 and i'd have no issue if you reduced the auction time.

Love that big fiver. Modified effigy which ran for just two years, mintage of 3'315 according to Numista.
I've been gathering one of each effigy type and somehow overlooked this Maklouf mod.
