This comes from the HMRC manual (CG78305)

    "Foreign currency
Currency may take the form of notes, coins or travellers cheques.
You may need to determine the location of currency if you are dealing with an individual charged on the remittance basis, see CG25300+. There is no rule in TCGA92/S275 specifically governing the location of currency. You should apply the rule in Section 275 (b) for tangible moveable property.
Coins are to be regarded as currency only if they are legal tender at the time of their acquisition or disposal. Coins which are currency but not sterling, for example Krugerrands, are chargeable assets.
Sovereigns minted in 1837 and later years and Britannia gold coins are currency but, like all sterling currency, are exempt because of TCGA92/S21 (1)(b).
Coins (including pre- 1837 sovereigns) which are not legal tender are not currency. They are chattels and qualify for the chattels exemption in TCGA92/S262. A gain on such a coin is therefore exempt if the disposal consideration does not exceed the limit in CG76573. You should bear in mind the possibility that the disposal of more than one coin may constitute the disposal of a `set’, see CG76631+.
The chattels exemption does not apply to coins which are non-sterling currency, TCGA92/S262 (6)(b)."
and then a bit from CG76573
"There is no chargeable gain on the disposal of a single chattel (tangible moveable property) if the gross consideration does not exceed £6,000.
Where the consideration exceeds £6,000 the chargeable gain may be restricted, see CG76577."

You might want to look on here for German dealers with Elephants in stock

Of course there is the dreaded Customs palaver if you import from Germany these days.
There was also a 15 year commemorative in 2018 with a mix of the 2004 version and the 2018 version.  It always looked to me as if the 2004 elephant was levitating so I wasn't keen on it - perhaps that is why I remember it.

If you look at the proofs there is a date on both sides of the coin.

I'd guess at Birmingham 18ct 1963-4.  The date letter for 1963-4 is an italic O looks a bit like a rugby ball.

Don't go too big on the non-UK stuff because you will find that is subject to CGT if you make substantial gains.
You might think about Queens Beasts (not sure about the Tudor Beasts series) but there should be plenty to keep you interested with sovereigns and Britannias.

I have never bought direct from the Perth Mint so I do not know but there are plenty of horror stories on here of being charged VAT on imported gold coins and having to claim it back (and getting an admin charge from the courier company).  It is quite easy to pick up Aussie coins from UK dealers.  New ones from Chards or Atkinsons (they are in Birmingham so could be convenient for you).  Old ones you could look at HGM as you never know what will walk through their door.
One other foreign coin to look out for are the Mexican Libertads (although they look a lot better in proof than in bullion).

VAT is (to date) only an issue for silver and platinum not gold.

That could get expensive depending on the dates you have in mind.  Try not to go back before 1837.

I have sometimes seen proof sovereigns in auctions "unopened in the packaging" and they usually go for good prices.  I have to resist the temptation to ask the auction house to open the package and show us the coin because I assume some people like to collect these things but really how do you know there is anything in the box?.
