Well done for making the effort.  It will be interesting to find out.  I'm sure the VAT will turn out to be pitiful.  Anyone who has been buying more than small amounts has been buying from the continent and will simply continue to do so by vaulting in Europe if required to avoid the unjustified 20%.  Hopefully the info will justify a call to abolish vat on silver and promote the UK as a silver trading hub after Brexit   I can but dream.

This is from an article in the Telegraph in 2010.  "VAT was originally a French idea, started in the 1950s. Britain introduced it as part of its condition of joining the European Economic Community. All countries joining the EEC had to replace their indirect taxes with the VAT. It replaced the Purchase Tax, which was a fairly complex system that had many different rates."

Personally I think it's a dreadful tax.  It manages to slow everything down and adds an enormous drag on every transaction in an economy.  It's nice and easy though for governments which is why it's their weapon of choice.  Without doubt it hits the least well off the hardest and it has some weird side effects as well.

I have just done a freedom of information request to find out how much VAT & CGT HMRC have collected over the last 10 years on silver.
It took a little searching but the email is foi.request@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

It's complete hypocrisy for the German led EU to push vat laws on silver for other members of the EU while allowing German and Belgian dealers to charge vat only on their profit margin.  German dealers have cornered the market as a result and they have devastated the dealers in the rest of Europe that tow the line.  Once the UK leaves, it has a genuine chance to redress the balance in this area if it chooses to do so.  Just imagine if UK dealers were suddenly able to sell silver VAT free.  It would immediately return all of that business currently going to Germany, Belgium and Estonia back to the UK.  If they do nothing and continue with VAT on silver then 95% of the business volume will collapse.  The Germans won't get it and nor will HMRC.  It will simply evaporate somewhere else.  So, the correct way to propose this is that the UK dealers would have a sudden boom if the VAT on silver was removed and that boom in sales would increase their profit margins.  This would then be taxable to the HMRC and they would in fact make a gain on silver for the first time in a very long time.  Currently they make nothing on silver and by de VAT-ing it they stand to make money on dealer profits.  Of course, the counter argument is that they will force everyone into gold instead and make the additional tax on dealers profits but it's surely worth a shot.  Making the point that without attention, the UK would become the only country in Europe actively preventing a silver market and making nothing out of it.  Preventing business is not a good way to start Brexit.  Brexiteers are keen to support business and open the UK up to opportunity so this could well be a persuasive argument for the right politician.

The UK should team up with the USA and show the other EU members how it could work. So we might get rid of the EU in it's current form...
Ordering from US dealers without/with low import duties would open new possibilities

Here is an idea: why don't we as a group start a campaign to lobby the government to remove VAT on silver bullion, to bring it into line with gold bullion ?  We could all write to our MPs.

How about a moon landing medal?  Not sure what these are or if they are genuine or at a decent price but must be an Apollo coin somewhere

I've not been following this thread but noticed @KDave's comment on the home page under latest comments. The mention of John Bercow made me chuckle. At work we have the BBC News channel on, with sound muted and subtitles displayed. When reporting live from Parliament the BBC typed Mr Speaker's name in the subtitles as John Burka.  Whoops.  Wonder if he gets a lot of hand delivered mail from Boris?

I'm sure whoever told bercow to do it has agreed something, or perhaps compensated him already. Remember it's only been a couple of days since May tried to make the UK a vassal state, she could care less about this, but at least she is still playing the pantomime and keeping up appearances.
At least we have that. He should have been sacked but as we are at banana republic levels of corruption now anything goes.

It's a mess for sure.  Berkow played a dreadful hand last week and he surely must go as well as May.
I think the only option that's going to work is a general election with hopefully everyone that voted leave voting for UKIP.  Labour are simply talking remain language and calling it leave.  It's blatant lying and everyone knows it.  The remainers in my family held their noses and voted for Labour and Liberal last time because as they said Labour and the Liberals will not take us out fully.  The leavers wouldn't touch them with a barge pole and all voted conservative.  The only sensible option now in my opinion is UKIP.  At least we'd get someone that want's to do the job that they've been asked to do.
It seems to be forgotten that UKIP are polling much higher again.  Back in the last election people thought the job was done and simply abandoned UKIP for the traditional parties.  They might not be so happy to repeat the same mistake in another election.  Watching the Tories do Brexit has been like watching the celebrities do bush tucker challenge on TV.  So many of them are repulsed by the idea of leaving that they should have resigned prior to the last election rather than standing on a manifesto that they vehemently disagree with.  What was the point of us having an election if the main parties just stood up their remainer candidates again for us to choose from?  It made a complete mockery of the idea that we have a genuine representative democracy.  We clearly don't.
Most conservatives if offered the choice of a Labour government under the friends of Terrorists and communism, or a UKIP coalition where UKIP managed the whole damn thing would jump at the latter.  UKIP are actually pretty moderate in the rest of their policies so it could work.  Having read their manifesto, I think they seem to be classical liberals at heart with a nationalist focus.  Fair enough in my opinion.
