Has a stand alone Royal commemorative ever been a winner? one that's not linked to an already popular series like sovereigns etc
    Fine but boring design
5000 mintage for the silver proof is fairly high
Destined to end up selling for less on Ebay is my guess

Yeah, sorry, that's not accurate. Post 2013 Britannia's are 99.9% pure.
EDIT: OK for UK currency the silver content goes as follows.
Renaissance through to 1919: "Sterling" silver as standard (92.5% pure)
1920 to 1947: 50% pure silver (can spot a mile away as these coins tarnish to a darker color and have a slightly greenish tinge because of the Manganese content.
post 1947: no silver in normal currency, varying levels of purity in special editions.
    Britannias:
1997 (launch) to 2012 the weight was slightly above one troy ounce (32.45g) at a purity of 95.8% pure
2013 onwards, one troy ounce (31.21g) at a purity of 99.9%

    Spot on,my error.
I meant to point out the difference between Britannia and Sterling Silver .........................The silver Britannias were, quite appropriately, struck in Britannia silver, which is 958 parts per thousand silver, instead of the more usual sterling silver of 925 parts per thousand. Many other world silver coins, particularly those of American influence are struck in only 900 silver.
The above is in my understanding  correct...........
My error was in saying" compared to the common standard used today of .925 parts per thousand" as Pans Purse correctly points out post 2013 Britannias became 999 parts per thousand.
I knew something happened post 2013 and probably explains why I buy more gold than silver.......good spot

    1000s in a week,hmmmmmmmmmmmmm,
.I used to work as a valuation philatelist for a major stamp dealer in a previous life and he said never forget it " if I hadnt spent 2 hours studying a stamp minimum I had only looked at  the damn  thing."
Lets look at an hour/study period not 2  per sov
24 hours/day,7 days,/week =168  hours in a week or 1 hour spent  studying a  sov at  a time means you could study 168 sovs in a week with no breaks for food,,sleep  or  anything else,
""studied 1000s of sovs this week".................that is damn impresssive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if you want to become an expert, you need to spend more than a couple of minutes studying each coin, no matter how many you look at

I believe him.  If I had access to 1000 sovs I'd find the time to go through each one somehow.  I wouldn't take an hour/sov tho

In a way but they also get to see and research the really good quality and rare ones. The museum have access to all the archived records, dies and goodness knows what else. They really are the last word on what is genuine or not.
    All yours? Fricking hell!

Couple of points, probably made above, so sorry to repeat if doing so.
Atkinsons customer relations are second to none in my experience,if they described the item as new and it was not that would be imo a genuine mistake on their part, unlike the common practices of some dealers I could mention, but will not because of libel/slander laws, always get those two mixed up, and am 100% confident that they will sort the matter out to your satisfaction.
Cant say I share the ops confidence in this buffalo being of numismatic value......have a few of em myself two slabbed at 69 and 70 and I only bought the slabbed ones because I was taking advantage of a seller who didnt have a clue about pricing, shocking behaviour on my part I know I gfeel guilty as hell about it, its all opinion but I dont see these coins as numismatic items but others are perfectly entitled to disagree.
Finally I would never consider Atkinsons as a place to seek out true numismatic coins, they very rarely handle any. Talking Sovereigns only here.Having said that you could argue that they are the first place you should look as its my view that they wouldnt notice a truly numismatic sovereiegn if you slapped em in the face with it and therefore you might be very lucky and get a real bargain from time to time.
I see them as a first class bullion dealer, grading is certainly not their forte and if willing to spend decent amounts of cash on numismatic coins unseen I feel you have to accept the risk of your idea of an extremely fine unc coin may well differ greatly from someone elses............said finally above so apologies, but Atkinsons have always been happy to send me photos of any coins I have asked for before I make a purchase or not and I think one should always ask for such, which again you will not get from a good many other dealers out there.
