savoyard got a reaction from goldmember44 in It takes nerves to continue collecting silver
I bought silver mainly thinking in a 5-10 year perspective. I don't need to sell now, so I don't care about the current prices. If I sold, I'd be about 15-20% down. I'll start worrying if and when I need to sell, which is as late as possible. I'd only sell now if silver price skyrocketed suddenly,  which happened a couple of times in he last 25 years.

If that is the case, why have central banks been hoarding gold for the last 10 years?

Probably not straigh bartering, but an intermediate step such as each town printing their own fiat currency, a bit like it happened (I was told) in Austria in the mid 1800s,  when there was no liquidity and farmers started issuing fiat currencies that were backed by bartering.
When it comes to gold &/or silver, they can be used as collateral to new currencies. This is simply what used to happen before 1971. One needs not imagine apocalyptic scenarios, but just see what happened in the past. In my opinion, PM's are not an investment but a long term insurance vs inflation or systemic collapses.

Once you put your money in the bank, be it cash or electronic, the ownership is transferred to the bank. You have the right to have withdraw the money, but on terms and conditions that are favourable to the bank. Obvious as it is, most people don't know that.

If they are resident in UK and pay NI contributions, yes they get free NHS. What's your problem with that?
And not all NHS services are free. I still have to pay my NHS dentist, albeit less than a private doctor.
The loophole allowing just anybody to use the NHS was closed last year. Even here in multi-culti Birmingham they have started asking for passports and NI declarations. I had to print my tax record off the HMRC site to join my dentist practice.

Re: Trump, NHS, Brexit, you've read it already. Apparently Trump backtracked on the NHS being on the table for a post Brexit deal, but...
Mind you, I think that "free at the point of delivery" NHS is doomed and no longer sustainable and that we should go a system like in Germany or the Netherlands, where you pay into your health system with your private contributions, subject to exemptions for poorer people.

However, I wonder how all the older Brexiteers living on a state pension, who voted to leave the EU to kick the "system" in the lower regions and blaming everything on the "dirty immigrants" feel now if the UK had, one day, to capitulate to the USA and sell part of the NHS to the Americans (I believe Jeremy *unt was in favour when the was the Unhealth minister and might as well finish the job if he becomes PM).

Yes, only the ultra rich will be able to buy a visa to study abroad. The EU membership has allowed over 200,000 British students to study abroad alone under the Erasmus scheme, plus those who have not used the Erasmus scheme and cannot be counted.
All in all, this is simply a case of the old not wanting the young to enjoy the benefits they couldn't enjoy when they were younger. Selfish!

I met quite a few British students in the Netherlands and Germany, all of them enjoying free education (and in English, too) and much more intelligent than the average prats that populate our high streets on Friday/Saturday nights. All this will end for them if Britain goes gung-ho hard Brexit.
