    Today I Received

Half sovs just arrived from HGM, George V 1925 and Liz 1982, very pleased with the condition. Couldn't believe how excited I was opening the package and wondering what I had been sent. Apologies for the crappy camera. My first gold.

    Today I bought.....

Bought last weekend - a 2coin lot of Vic florins - including an 1849 “godless” florin along with an 1870 These were about £80 for the pair. Would welcome peoples opinion on whether these are good value purchases , or for did I overpay? Looking in close up at the Godless 1849 - what a stunning unique design, with all the detail on Victoria ‘s embroidery and her braided hair Cant remember who - someone of the Forum posted a stunning example a few months ago - so mine is not in that league - but i do love it. Then today - just a few nice 1 ounce silver bars: here i am just picking up unique designs as / when i see them to make a small collection of different bars. The Pamp is nice - all fancy in its holder ( still just an ounce of silver in the end - I know!). A Northwest Territorial Mint design i had not seen before, and then two SF Mint Assay Office pieces from 1981 when apparently they melted down some of the stock to make bars. And i can never refuse an Engelhard in any design ( not in the pics though) - and finally what looks like a pretty old RCM bar ( would be interested if any advice on the age of that Canadian bar)

I don’t buy ASE or Bullion Britannia’s for that very reason. I always try to buy things that I find personally interesting. Sometimes those things go up in price and sometimes they do not. I always feel that if I really like something then it is more than likely that others will also find that thing interesting. However, when it comes to regular American or British gold commemorative’s, there is an almost 0 track record of premium growth.

    Grading

I prefer to use PCGS because by using the Paris grading week option coins are back in your possession very quickly. PCGS take submission's on some dates of the Birmingham and London coin fairs and i always get my coins back within 3 weeks of submission. Regarding crossover's, one of my fellow five pound collectors told me that he has submitted several NGC PF70's to PCGS for crossover and they have been downgraded to PF69, but of course you have the option to hold grade or leave the coin in it's current holder. I have only crossed two coins and they both held PF70. One downside with PCGS is that they have a very limited optional label choice, in fact there are none for RM coins. They had a recent survey of members on how to improve things and this was one topic, so maybe it will improve. I would always be happy to submit coins to PCGS on behalf of forum member's.

If its in a slab then i'm guessing its not artificially toned. If rainbow toning is your thing (and it is 99% more of a thing in the US than over here) its not bad at all... I've seen some common date Morgans go for ridiculous premiums because of rainbow toning. All in the eye of the beholder I think.

    Does size matter ?

I am building a business doing this myself... I have bought and sold from a 1/20 to a kilo in silver. Anyone who repeats the mantra you will sell at spot, neither has the knowledge or skill set to make money out of this asset class other than luck. To make money you need to 'hustle' for want of a better word. Don't worry about the premiums, have four strategies in mind. 1) buy strong series when they come put and sit on them. 2) See what the benchmark is and beat it with postage in mind...my favourite tactic is to befriend small dealers around the world as different markets value coins differently. By dealing with small dealers you have more room to negotiate a good price as people do business with their friends and also small dealers are price takers rather than price givers. 3) build a core stack that revolves around spot. I sell for spot times 1.3 plus post(for my basic range), I am probably the cheapest guy on the market for coins when people are buying small amounts. Finally 4) diversify into other sizes, this is where you should be making more mark up as the coins are more specialist. I will finish the year up with 2k ounces (most probably), now I understand I have more scope when buying and selling and I certainly have more options when times are slow. But eventually everyone who continues stacking will get to the stage where they are self-sufficient. Buying is a real skill and its something you will get better and better at. Selling is simple, you will be a price taker and will have to work to the bar set (which is usually eBay). What you need to understand is that your coins will have a spectrum in regards of time, consider it like baking. Some coins you can sell straight away, others need some time to cook and others need time to grow. So I propose this, forget about premium. Consider your strategies on buying and time, they are the ingredients you need to succeed.

Don't go down the collecting route until you have amassed a few hundred Oz ag and a few Oz of au, then spend as you please... on what you please... if this makes you happy go for it. I amassed a core position then went off into a flight of fancy buying all sorts of lovely coins... they more interesting than plain bullion coins. This approach keeps me interested in the PM's.
