Thank you!  That explains it. I looked this morning, eventually decided to get one, and when I went back I thought I missed it.

What a day!  12 hours on from release and there has been a massive buzz about these.  I found an old Royal Mint Bulletin - issue 123 which had details of the "special" 2012 sovereigns.  2012 looked like a massive year for coins.  Of special interest was the one day striking for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.  The certificate was hand signed by the Head of Production of Commemorative Coins to confirm the day of striking.

Looking at the sets available the question has got to be - what is happening with the 250 not being presented as single coins?

I have to say they tracked the SAM Silver Proof Sovereign Price pretty accurately.  There must be a lot of very keen buyers to pay the premiums on issue for these coins.  The one thing that supports the price, though is the speed of the sell out at the RM.

The forum insight into this has made this a very exciting issue, indeed!

The 2017 BU 5 Sovereign has now sold out too.

That's all 3 coins sold in 1.5 days or so...Congrats to all the buyers as this is likely to be a winner (at least as good as the Peter Rabbit 2017 )) @shortstack68 )

The last month or so was going so well too - settled in for a quiet summer. Then the RM went and did this  Now looking forward to seeing these in the flesh. Very tempting to get the bu graded and I pinged off a very rude email demanding all capsules be tightly screwed in and expecting perfection for the money etc etc. Has a consensus developed as to which of the three is the best choice ?

The Five-Sovereign Piece 2017

The largest coin in the Sovereign family
Struck in 22 carat gold to Proof standard
Just 1,000 coins available - not available in any set

That's a bit naughty. (from the RM email)

Yup, appreciate that but to advertise it as a Proof?

Being picky, I know. :P

edit: Didn't realise but Clens92 had already spotted this :)

Nothing wrong with bu "to a proof standard." rather than, "proof." It states clearly what it is on the link on their website (see above) compared to proof. Coin buying equivalent of kicking the tyres on a car., I guess :)

I think it's just plain wrong )) a mistake

Do you guys think with the extra 250 mintage, they might be doing a set that includes a Britannia and the Sovereign?

Probably a Piedfort Set

Maybe a 2017 Piedfort Britannia?

You're correct Sir.

I'm being picky, I know!

Just, as an Englishman, with pride in his country, I found it sad that the 'Royal Mint' would make such an error in the email.

They list both the Piedfort Sovereign and the £5 as Finished to Proof standard. :P

I really loved the Piedfort, the excitement was building prior to the launch.  Then I saw a video on You Tube from a well respected source!  The BU Strike on the Day came sharply into focus - low numbers, true to the original so I have to admit this became my first choice!  Then I was frightened I'd miss out after not picking up one of the earlier proofs and I ordered the Piedfort.  I was then even more excited that I had got both and am so looking forward to getting them!  The large BU was not on my radar at all!  But I am pleased that it has sold out and congratulations to all buyers, it is magnificent too.

So I rate them #3 BU Five, #2 BU and #1 Piedfort but I think they are all great and I am so glad I spent the time to consider the views (& videos) from Forum members.

First after market 2017 Gold Proof Piedfort Sovereign sold on eBay this afternoon at £1299 at 14.17 today

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=2017+Gold+Piedfort+Sovereign&LH_Complete=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=2017+Gold+Piedfort+Sovereign&_sacat=0

Only x3 other folk have theirs listed at higher price

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=2017 Gold Piedfort Sovereign&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684

Not the immediate resale mania of the likes of the earlier 2017 sovereign sets & Peter Rabbit etc

Is this going to be a keeper and value will raise in future ??

There are some very enterprising people out there.

Why don't we all do this?

I guess it just seems wrong to sell something you don't have in hand and actually won't exist for another few weeks!

Edit: Am I getting mixed up with the bicentenial BU sov, does the piedfort exist yet?

Profile picture with thanks to Carl Vernon
