Grading Question

Hi all,

After getting my fingers burnt on the silver Krugerrand (my first attempt at getting something graded) I had a look at one of the other coins I'm thinking of submitting, the 1oz Silver Proof RM Unicorn of Scotland.

To the naked eye it looks fine but under a bit of magnification I can see 2 small spots,

Any advice on how these will effect grading would be much appreciated.

I have spoken to RM who will take it back but they're sold out so it's this one or nothing.

After the anniversary Krugerrand situation, I feel your pain.

In this case the urgency to keep is impacted upon by the fact that they've sold out.

I too will be interested in the grading specialists replies, is one a spot and the (top) other a chip?  The magnification is great, but proof should be blemish free.

I'm not 100% sure what either are as I haven't done more than take the pic. They're certainly marks on the coin.

The bottom of the horses mouth would worry me from a grading perspective, unless that's just a reflection

Had a look through the magnifier, rotated through 360 and the image of the mouth didn't change so I'm pretty sure that's it rather than a reflection.

If you're particularly interested in getting a PR70 or 69, send it back and try and source one elsewhere.

I bought it as a long term investment. The idea in grading was to supplement that.

Concern now is that if I've noticed these, what effect would it have or grading or resale ungraded.

I've no idea how a couple of milkspots will affect grading, others will know. However, if it's got a couple now there is always the worry it will develop more even after it's been graded, affecting the value even more. That mark on the horse's mouth will definitely affect it though.

Yup. I think it has to go then.

Mine has the same kind of marks on the mouth/lips, I too hadn't really taken notice before.

I know of someone around here who bought 10 and has sent them all back!

That's disconcerting. Pethaps I'll not bother sourcing a replacement then.

That's reassuring - I had the same issues and question.

Although I thought these "chips" were dust imprints as I already had some lint engraved in one coin. The lip gloss ? on the unicorn seems to be rather a feature than an error ?

Btw @Mariner1961 what's your photographic setup?
