Gold as gifts

Roy

Recommended Posts

I just read an interesting article from Bleyer Bullion about gold as a wedding gift.

I recently had silver dogtags made by @GoldBenj for some friends of mine's wedding anniversary and they were an instant hit.

Has anyone ever given gold or silver as gifts? Or received some?

Good idea or not?

I have had a number of people give a hand poured silver heart that I stamped for them as a wedding gift and it went down very well with people!

Shamless self promotion but here are all the gifts I have made:

Not quite the same but me and my wife bought each of our sons their first 1oz silver coin at Christmas to start their collection 1 really likes gold and silver now 2 not really interested in collecting so it's really good if it sparks interest I also go at a poured heart 1/2oz heart for the wife at valentines something she can always carry and she likes it personally I think it's a great gift . I bought my dad a silver eagle last year as he was saying for years he would like one I really regret not getting him one sooner as he loves it. Did I say that I personally thing gold is a great gift idea !

The Indians et al have been giving gold at weddings for millennia.

I wear a gold chain and bracelet which were given as wedding gifts.  Got a couple of gold chains given to be when I was born too.  Pretty customary for Chinese and East Asian cultures for close family to give gold for weddings and briths.  Unfortunately it is a very expensive tradition when you have a large family.  Wasn't so bad when gold was ~£300/oz.

Yes, you are both right of course.

Is it something we as westerners have missed out on?

I received some gold sovereigns for my christening. (a long time before the end of the gold standard and yes, still got them too MZ.)

My sister is marrying this summer and as a wedding gift I have bought her and the husband a 2017 gold maple in a nice wooden presentation box, which I am having engraved with the names and wedding date on it to mark the occasion. They met in Canada a few years ago so it makes sense to me. To my knowledge they know absolutely nothing about the value of precious metals so it will be amusing to see what they think of it. To them it will appear as a shiny maple leaf coin in a box

Its just not the done thing normally. Sovereigns I am told are a tradition for some at christenings and you have added confirmation, but I have never known of it being done in my circle before. Uncle Kdave will be bringing back the tradition when the time comes (depending on where the spot price, it might just be a half sov) :P

Lol!

Wait, sovereignsteve gives silver?????

I know what you mean Kdave about it being popular but think of the time frame. Sovereigns had only just been re-released when I was born :o

I think they would be a great gift. I like your idea, Canada connection is cool.

Ollie...can you see the dancer?!  Wow....less wine for me :P

You guys!

I gave silver because of the link of 25 years being the silver anniversary.

I much prefer the Asian mindset....gold is the ultimate gift.

( I appreciate you may be teasing :))

well for me being a goldsmith makes it almost cheaper for me to gift silver and gold than go out and buy a present ?

Being that I can make gifts myself always seems to go down as more of a personal touch too so I've made many christening bangles and similar things for friends and family.

I know it's not bullion, I bought my brother and his wife for their 25th wedding anniversary a sterling silver table set, source boat nice one pepper pot salt pot mustard pot plus spoons, napkin rings a very nice bonbon dish, all Chester H  marks Victoria.

We went round for tea and they were using them, I don't think they know how much they are worth!!  It was certainly the most expensive gravy salt and pepper I have ever had???.

Been giving my godchildren a silver 2012 silver Britannia each every time they have a birthday or Xmas. Had a silver commemorative hand poured (mixed and refined for 999 purity with coins melted down from the year they were each born in) and engraved for both my Mum and Dad - one each, boxed and COA. Received a Mappin and Webb gold engraved and hallmarked  Armada dish - lovely object.

Hi Roy,

I'm glad to hear that you thought our article was interesting. :)

Personally unless we needed something specific, I would be very pleased to get gold or silver for a gift, far more useful in the long run.

educate them?

I did give my kids a proof sovereign of their birthyear a few years ago and was glad none of them were born in 1989:D

Just missed it, son born in 1988 and luckily all the years' coins are worth the same, or I'd have caused some sibling rivalry and received it in the ear for my trouble!

That reminds me. My daughter was born just two months before Princess Charlotte and yup, you guessed it.......2015 cost me a fortune......

birth coin, christening coin proofs, 2015 4th and 5th portrait gold sov proofs (very very rare event to have two different portraits on a sovereign coin in the same year)

What I think is maybe give them something which is likely to go up in value , fast , for example the South Africa proof
