French Maker's Mark

Recommended Posts

Hi, new member please excuse any mistakes. I have what I think is a French snuff box stamped Edward Hunt 1760, photo attached. A set of 3 marks are stamped into the inside of the lid, the inside of the base and the inside of the walls. In addition there is a 1789 mark of discharge on the closed rim. The quality of the marks varies from place to place. One place has a clear P89 mark, a second has what appears to be a clear makers mark, photo attached. The third mark is unreadable but looks like a capital 'C'. I cannot find any reference for the makers mark including Markham's Hand Book to French Hall Marks. The box is nice in design but fairly ordinary in construction and decoration. Any help on the Maker's mark which I take to be a minor Paris silversmith would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, thank you for your response. I am fairly sure the arrangement of the letters in the usual triangular format mean the name is JFP. I tried searching assuming the first Christian name was Jean, Jules etc. etc. but without success. As you say probably an unrecorded silversmith.

Regards Der
