Advice for new comer

Hello all,

First off, if this post is seen as "spam" content, i do apologize.

I am very new to the whole collecting/stacking Silver thing, so far I only have 8.5 oz of silver, all of which are coins.

I want to collect both coins and bars, any advice on which places are good for bars (I like the look of hand poured bars a lot), also, I have been advised to get a safe to store it in but I'm not really sure I should bother at this stage, seeing as I only have very little silver to my name.

Also, and this part i'm really not sure if it's ok to say/ask, so if not i'm sorry. I have an average budget of about £100 per month, maybe stretching to £150 to spend on Silver/Gold, any advice on how to use this amount to its full potential.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Hi & welcome along to the forum. I would say get a safe as spending that a month will soon add up in a year or 2 you wouldn't want it to be stolen. Gold or Silver you will get opinions for both. I personally prefer gold as you know if you needed to scrap quickly you can get a good price for it whereas Silver not so but on the other hand Silver could increase more % wise than gold e.g 2x what spot is now.

Just my opinion though [emoji4]

best sites -
atkinsons bullion - UK
silver to go -  Germany also a site sponsor, you avoid VAT with this company.

I would avoid bars personally as they normally carry VAT, coins you can normally get away with when buying from Europe.
What I say is just buy what you like, always try and keep the premiums down but you have to like what your buying into.
I have a very diverse stack, I spend a bit more on some coins and less on others.

If I was you I would start buying silver first then start buying gold.
To get the most out of your money I would save for say 4 months then spend 400 on one order from Europe as delivery will seriously eat into your profits buying with 100 pound a month.

With a budget of say ÂŁ150 per month and a target price of ÂŁ18 per ounce for cheap bullion you are looking at accumulating up to 8 ounces per month.
Ordering from the main sources in Germany to avoid the 20% VAT you will be hit with shipping charges.

Either look for sales on this Forum or save your money to place larger orders in order to amortise shipping costs.
I cannot see a safe being required for a very long time.
You might wish to consider buying a half sovereign every month, but at entry level right now you will not have much to show if you buy gold.

Hi and welcome along to the forum.

Definately buy a safe, be it 1oz or 1000oz if its nicked its gone !

As for your budget, keep an eye out on here, plenty of good offers pop up from trusted sellers, buying from here gives you an added security ( i like to think, am i right guys ?)  Avoid ebay until you know what to look for , there are lots of trusted ebay sellers many of whom are members here too, but there are also people out to take you're dosh and rip you off.

Regarding hand poured work, there are a few on here who do it, i personally can recommend@BackyardBullion  from the forum who was superb start to finish.

100% I would never buy from eBay, I just don't trust it enough to risk my hard earned money. Stick to either buying from here or from reputable sites.
I am not sure a safe is worth it as unless its a vault, a safe can be stolen cant it? I think until you have a fair few ounces it wouldn't be worth it.
Find an inventive way of hiding your coins or get a lockbox for now. Once you have enough then it might be worth buying a safe.

Also keep the buying of PM's to yourself. Only tell people that need to know, otherwise I would keep it to yourself!

The smaller your monthly budget, the more delivery adds to your total cost so I would recommend looking at Goldsilver.be or Celticgold who offer storage/combined orders. I can't emphasize this enough.. I save myself literally hundreds of £££ a year in taking this approach, which adds up to a considerable number of extra ounces over the years.

Stick with bullion and don't bother with bars - there is no cost advantage to them for UK stackers.

Thanks @Bullionbilly !

Hand poured silver is not always the cheapest for stacking. It should be considered a guilty pleasure or a LONG term investment for that lucky day when I become a hand poured superstar and my early pieces are worth a fortune ????

Get a safe and bolt it to the wall or floor. It will give you alot of peace of mind!

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I will take it all on board, maybe getting into bars is not the best thing moving forward.

As for safe's, would anyone have any recommendations? Good sites to look at for one, I take it they are not cheap, especially for a good quality one which is what I would want.

I suppose alot of you're safe choice depends on where its going, you can get one for under £30 that goes inbetween the floor joists. Nice and small( approx 400mm x 250mm and 100mm deep ) and its out of site.

I put one like this into the wall at my old house in a kitchen cupboard then covered it with the cupboard back board  nobody would ever know it was there.

Buy what you like and stack what you can. Research the best option for you. Currently, silver has dropped tremendously so get a jump on some rounds. I wouldn't prefer buying poured silver because it is expensive, maybe wait until you have your stack where you want it to be. I think buying a safe is smart, even when you're just starting.

Are the standard silver bars worth investing in then? I can understand why hand poured bars would be more expensive simply because of the time it takes to make them.

I ask only because I would like to have a more diverse stack/collection, than just having the same coins/rounds.

Thanks.

Silver soon fills safes up.  I don't bother with a lot of my bulkier or cheaper stuff as a decent safe would cost as much as the silver value.  I just use big plastic cases and put rarer silver and gold in safes.

I like to keep all my silver in a football sock and wear it about one's person.

It does attract attention however
