eBay Gambles

Yesterday I took a credit card punt on a very likely too good to be true eBay listing - a 1/4 oz gold Queens Beast Lion for £270.

I was half expecting to never hear from the seller again (only 1 feedback).

Today, I received the following message from the seller:

'Shipment will be sent in the morning sorry for delay, Due to delay have added Free Silver 2 Oz Griffin coin, need to keep clients happy'

The following options are now in play:

1. I've been introduced to the world's most generous spirited eBayer, as karmic reward for my life of good behaviour.

2. I'm about to receive my first fake beasts.

3. I will now never hear from the seller again.

My hypothetical money is on 2 or 3.

Feel free to share your stories of eBay gambles and foolishness.

PS. My all time favourite eBay seller story is the person who told me he couldn't send my items (which didn't sell for as much as he would have liked), as his car had been stolen with them in the boot.

:D Not PM but I was once messaged that the seller couldn't  send the item because his mum wouldn't let him!

That's fantastic.

You'd have to let them off just for being willing to say that.

Hee hee, I didn't lose sleep over it. Only a book.

It was 2004 or 5 I think? Different eBay then.

I've just taken a gamble and bought this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252823293059?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

£26.54 with free shipping, Serial Number checks out and it's not that dearer than just a bare coin so I am buying the slab and not the coin.  I saw it at about 3 in the morning with a couple of hours to go and was feeling bleary eyed so just bid on it with a view to if I get it I get it and if I don't no worries.  Seller has sold coinage and silver before but I could have sworn when I checked this he had a couple of pages of other items for sale but now he has nothing.

Time will tell.

I'll go with no: 1 ever the optimist.

However my nature is to always think the best of people, my experience tells me to be cynical.

Just remembered, don't paypal change their terms re: gold protection soon?

Realise you paid by CC though so doesn't apply.

I hope it works out for you getting the 2oz beast.  But that is a chunky freeby, if it arrives for you.

I have been gifted a FREE half oz of silver a few years back when I bought consistently from the same eBay seller over a few months.

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt too. It turns out OK more often than not.

Good to know about the PayPal change, didn't realise this.

I once thought I was on to a winner winning a kilo silver Kookaburra at less than half spot price.
The picture was clear and showed a kilo coin.

When the postman handed me a letter there was a tiny 5 gram miniature inside.
I was waiting for the box with the kilo coin inside.

The miniature was a true replica on both sides but because it was so thin it had a smooth edge.
The photo on eBay ( turns out to be a library picture copied from elsewhere ) showed a thick reeded coin so that gave me comfort when I asked to return the miniature.
Fortunately there was no argument but until I got my ~£250 refunded there was frustration.

A good purchase - hoping you don't have to pay £8 fee plus 20% VAT when it arrives in the UK.
Let us know please.

Will do Pete, avoiding the £8 would be nice, it's some kind of Israeli post that it's sent by.

The plot thickens - apparently I'm now set to receive a free 2 oz lion rather than a griffin, and my items are being sent from Thailand, as the seller is in holiday there, with the items presumably. I should now receive them by Wednesday, rather than the original estimate of yesterday. ?

Ok, you win!

Then again, when I holiday in Thailand I always take my stack with me. :D

You may as well prepare a dispute now.

It's clever though. Dupe 10 people out of £270, live it up in Thailand for a week then come back. play your dole card and say sorry.

@Shinus73this all seems very fishy to me.  There already has been way too much contact about shipping and free items etc. Most tranasctions in ebay usually have no contact at all from seller and buyer, beside an invoice and payment from my experience.

The first chance you get - I would try to file a dispute so it is on record.

No one - especially an eBay seller with less than a single digit feedback will give you a $45 coin for free.

Would this be the seller?

I bought a carded 2015 silver Britannia from him last night and he emailed me to say he'd post it in the morning, if that would be o.k. with me!

I'm having doubts now:unsure:

With our money he probably would be living like a 'King for a day', a bit like his username.

I saw that last night £20 for a carded 2015 Britannia and I gave it  miss as I thought it must be hooky.

He accepted £18 for it and then removed the rest from sale immediately after saying there was an error in the listing!

Got to be hooky.

A bargain indeed or a total scam ?

Sold a one ounce coin well below spot and once fees are deducted ... you judge .... the guy merits monitoring.

You never know, he might have pulled the rest because he realised he was selling them too cheap, a fraudster would have sold as many as he could.

He may not know the true value of his coins and is happy just to get rid of them. Once mine arrives I'll email him with a few questions just out of curiosity.
