1/10 gold, what to buy?

Hi All,

Im new to stacking and placed my first post a few weeks back asking for advice on stacking silver.  I got a lot of feedback from people saying I should stack gold and not silver.  Some said do both so as not to put all my eggs in one basket.  Though I don’t have a lot of money to play with I am going to try and squeeze 2 or 3 1/10 gold coins in.  My question is which ones?

I was having a look and from a point of view to selling down the line would the panda and elephant coins out do say the Britannia?  I was thinking of collecting the panda and the elephant and purchasing say a britannia one year, maple the next, krugerrand year after and so on as these designs don’t change.  The other option is to go say britannian and sovereign.  Which do you think would be better in the long run should I sell.

I started my gold collection with 1/10 Maples. Then moved onto Half sovs.

I like the look of the Maples but I have found that sovs seem to sell better/quicker than 1/10 gold.

I dont really have any other advice i'm affraid. I suppose the Pandas would be a good long term investment for the Numi point of view.

If you're in the UK, sovereigns or half sovereigns make the most sense I think, they're widely known and you'll have no problem selling them down the line.

As for 1/10th fractionals... I would just buy whatever is closest to spot

I started with a 1/10 maple in gold was very very pleased with it second one I got was the 1/10 american gold eagle which Ihad really   high hopes for  that made me appreciate the maple even more it's one of the best looking 1/10ths IMO  and not a big premium if you doing this long term you need something that YOU really like to keep your interest. I know my advice here is not the financial advice your after but sometimes it's more than just money that pushes you on what I'd say is if you can buy 2 at once then you can easily get rid of one without felling like you've lost the coin if you do need to sell one. My next purchase gold wise is hopfully going to be 1/4 maple but I my sell will struggle to get 2. Good luck

Wow, Im surprised I must admit.  Id have thought the coins with a changing face would sell better from a numi point of view.

especially elephant, they are carrying a high premium when new , this will put people off

MY TOTAL FORUM TRADE FEEDBACK IS 100 AND IT IS 100%

I tend to agree with @danmc82. that you should consider a gold sovereign.  A 2017 - brand new one - that would be my choice if I lived in the U.K. and was in your position.

I found out the hard way that if you are in a pinch and have to sell - gold bullion is gold bullion.  You will pay a greater premium for the 1/10 ounce gold coins than if you just buy 1 gold sovereign.

You don't have to listen to us, if you've researched and believe in silver go for silver

If you've researched Panda 1/10s and believe in them go that way

Personally I would go along with everyone else though and get a 1/2 sov :P

Buy whatever keeps you interested.  Sovereigns are lovely coins and you can't fault them for resalability, but I find they can get a bit boring after a while unless you collect the alternate designs.

Go with what you think looks best & as close to spot as possibly. I know you pay a higher premium for smaller coins but when it comes to selling you can also command the premium back so it doesn't really make a massive difference. You will however lose out if selling somewhere with 10+% fees.

I quite like 20 francs.  They're not far off spot, 5.8g so affordable, I've got 1 from 1803 so there old and loads of different designs from various countries.  Keeps me interested.

Totally agree, I also like these different types of European gold coins. Many countries to choose from, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Switzerland etc etc

Depends on if you're stacking or collecting.

If it's stacking weight then get sovereigns which are low premium and be disposed of very quickly for a quick exit/emergency/etc.

If you're collecting then you can choose whatever you want.  Disposing of these will take more time since you will want to get back the premium you paid.  Offloading to a dealer isn't really an option.

I collect 1/10ths so I'm happy to buy those despite the large premiums.  I also have sovereigns and half sovereigns which I've collected because of the different obverse and reverse and some I've bought just for the weight (low premium).  These will be the first to go in an emergency and will be used to balance CGT on exit.  For maximum potential with the 1/10ths I'd get Pandas, Elephant, Lunar 2, RAM Lunar, Canadian Call of the Wild, and anything else with a changing design.

I know coininvest direct based in Europe have a good selection of gold pieces for sale, that's where I bought a few of my European gold coins from, good prices and I know a lot of people on this forum have used them with no trouble at all.  It is best to put in a big order tho as postage is just shy of £15

Ive only found Atkinsons Bullion to have anywhere near a varied collection for sale.  Are there any other good sites in the European or UK to buy Sov's / Fractional good from?

The SilverForum is a good place to buy sovs/fractional gold, but you need patience. At the current high spot price, that is prudent.
