Completing a collection - What's next?

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would ask the question -

What are your experiences, feelings, thoughts when you are in the process or have completed a collection?

I have read many threads in my short time on the forum and have enjoyed the joy and enthusiasm of our members when they get that final coin or that special bar that they have been searching for.

I myself still have the hunt going for the ever elusive one quarter ounce and the impossible 8gm gold Pamp Suisse Fortuna bars.  What drives me to search so hard to find these bars.  Having 15 of the 17 bars needed for the collection: Missing Bars #6 + #7

Bar # Bar Size in Grams Bar Size in Ounces
1          0.30      0.0096
2          0.50      0.0161
3          1.00      0.0322
4          2.50      0.0804
5          5.00      0.1608
6          7.78      0.2500
7          8.00      0.2572
8        10.00      0.3215
9        11.66      0.3750
10        15.55      0.5000
11        20.00      0.6431
12        23.33      0.7501
13        31.10      1.0000
14        34.99      1.1251
15        50.00      1.6077
16        58.32      1.8752
17      100.00      3.2154

Amounting to little more than a half ounce of gold - yet these two bars have become my obsession, looking on the internet, everyday,  hoping that a search result may finally pop with the results of finding one of them.  Searching through worldwide ebays' - contacting dealers in Australia, South America, Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Additionally, I did see the quarter ounce gold bar on Ebay 2 years ago - the seller wanted $300 over spot - at the time I thought forget that - I not paying that much over spot for it.  In hind sight, considering all the time I have put in searching for it now - I should have bought it.  $300 over spot is a bargain.

So what drives me to continue - why finish this set?

Because that is what we do as collectors - we create goals and we go out and accomplish them.

In the process we hopefully receive enjoyment, make new friends, and find it rewarding when we achieve our goals.

When I complete the Pamp Suisse collection - I will take a few pictures of it - make a video - and then put it into deep storage to pass on to my kids - or grand kids - and let them tell the story of how crazy grandpa put this collection together.  (Hopefully, they keep it together and not sell it to buy something stupid. (Like milk spotted silver) LOL   )

I hope you find them!

But, in a perverse way, an incomplete collection is far more interesting than a complete one.

@Pampfan Whats next after finding your bars? Will you change your name to Pandafan :D

Don't collect pandas,

but I do like 1/4 ounce gold coins graded 70. For some reason a lot of collectors hate this size, but I think that is the key to future collectibility, - so do not know how that would translate into anything.

So I guess I'll be forever known as pampfan.  ????

What size is popular?

I would think 1/10 is too small to properly enjoy the design and anything above 1/4 is getting pretty expensive to buy, and for people to buy from you in the future (should you choose to sell)

I have. I reasoned that they'd be easy to sell and even easier to price!

I don't think I'd get any more though. Pesky things.

How many do you have and which one's? I was going to fill a tube but I like my sovereigns to much.

Lots of 1/10 krugs. Sovereigns are a much better choice :)

I started collecting 1/10's but with old age and my eyes going bad - needing glasses - I found that 1/4 oz was just the right size and price point for me.

Then I stumbled on @Numistacker's video on the 1/4 ounce libertad, and because of the video I was able to pick one up at a great price.  And that basically was the start of the 1/4 ounce collection.

Just don't get started on high grade pre 1920s UK coins, that could become VERY expensive

I would agree with this!

I used to collect (well try to) complete date runs of various things - this got very silly particularly for world 19th Century stuff in high grade, not just price but also in space and lots of coins in VF just isn't the same.

Apart from sixpences, obviously:D, I have been restricting myself to only typesets for the last few years as that is more manageable - famous last words.

Having said that I regularly consider some of the pre-war and early European gold, as a change to sovereigns, for a date run but the key date is usually too expensive and having a collection with one missing is very annoying:lol:.

As long as whatever you collect is interesting to you then it doesn't matter and you can always change it.

The Sov design can get a little boring, year in year out St George, variety is the spice of life

I can have a bit of sympathy with this comment, I can't get excited by your average G&D sov either, although it is a brilliant design. I can't see how anyone could get bored with the Vic shields though, if you do, you have no soul :D There are plenty of variations to keep everyone happy too, even me:)

My experience of completing a collection is that I quickly decide to sell it, in order to fund another collection, before wishing I hadn't sold it, and start collecting it again....

I did go through a phase of collecting sov date runs by monarch and head, but I found that once I'd completed them I promptly sold them. If I ever completed a shield run I would never sell that though.

I thought I would collect the Canadian Wildlife one ounce silver coin sets then the Birds of Prey.
When the price of the very first silver coin - the Timber Wolf - rocketed I thought I was on to a winner so I built up about 20 full sets over time and even bought a bulk lot of custom wooden boxes and the correct size capsules with the intention of selling boxed sets for a profit.
If I sold today I would just about break even so hoping in another 100 years the sets might be worth more ( allowing for inflation ).

Well I think I have found my next project - the Perth mint oriana style gold bars.  Originally they were issued in about 10 sizes from 1 gram up to 100 grams.  I will not collect those - but the newer series of 1 ounce, 10 gram, 5 gram, and the 1 gram.

I am just bored searching for the 2 pamp bars - this little project should ease that.

Any thoughts on these bars?
