I do find this a bit odd , given the climate were in ,  I asked  hatton garden metals , and asked paul Atkinson the other day ,  can I pay by card over the phone please ,?

I cant remember the exact reason I think  I didn't one of my cards registered on my laptop , but anyway  here was their answer ..no sorry can you purchase on line please

how very odd in these recession times  , if you followed up the phone call by going on line  then fine , but if you think   naw ill not bother   then they lose a sale......how odd  in the worst recession since the war  that they didn't take cards over the phone

What's the problem with ordering online? You need exactly the same details as paying over the phone by card.

All these dealers have automated systems, and you are trying to get them to do it manually - back to the 1990's.

It's likely they don't have card machines where they answer the phone.

I think you need to embrace online shopping and online banking, it's simple if you try.

We aren't actually in a recession, but even with low growth and a struggling economy, I rather suspect that bullion dealers are doing better now (when people are flocking to metals as a safe haven), than in times when the wider economy is booming.

Given that, factor in the use of employee time for phone transactions, and concerns over security and misuse of card details, and I expect both Atkinsons and HGM are happy to rely on their online systems.

Of course as a consumer you are free to shop elsewhere, and maybe another vendor will take payment by phone. If they do, but are more expensive, then you will know why.

It's the payment gateway that will be the issue.

When paying through the site, their payment gateway will be setup to ask for security code and also do a postcode/address check. This reduces fraud.

Paying over the phone their terminal might not even be setup to accept "cardholder not present" transactions. Even if it is, it might not be setup to do a postcode/house number check.
