Gold Olympics 50p

Recommended Posts

So, I posted in deals a few weeks ago I thought this might turn out to be a sought after coin. Mintage is a tiny 306, and it's a really clean looking design.

Incredibly, we are now 2nd in the medals table tonight. Not sure if it will stay like that, but it's certainly going to be our best away Olympics ever.

Anybody think this might be a coin worth the gamble? I think it's possible it will sell out next week.

Are any RM Olympic coins sort after? how have previous years done, are they selling for a premium now?

My guess, being from the fact I've never seen or heard of them doing well, is they don't and neither will this one

But I don't know everything and maybe a little research will prove me very wrong.

I think they are up and down, but we have never had mintages this low. Nowhere near. 306 is nothing. I guess we will have to wait and see. It's a gut feel this could be a winner long term, but of course who knows. It's a £200 premium, so depends how happy, or not, you are to pay that for the gamble.

Of all the coins talked about on here for the last 2 years, I've never seen any Olympic ones mentioned

Mintage on its own means not a lot,  mintage+demand = recipe for success

100,000 mintage can be a low mintage for a high demand coin, 306 can be high for a low demand.

I think you would be better hunting down Gold Queen's beasts a far better looking coin and better demand with the set to follow, has to be a winner, soon as it shows good gains sell it.If i owned a gold queens beast it would be hard to sell, i think there stunning to look at, but i am not looking at that 50p with the same feelings.

If it's still on sale at the RM after weeks at that low mintage then that would suggest to me that the demand isn't great.

Yes agreed, but current release demand rarely equates to downstream collectibility and value. I am amazed how many collectors incorrectly equate the two.

Sold out. If we finish above China in the medal table, I honestly think this will be a really sort after coin. It will be our best away Olympics ever, and our best medal table finish ever.

306 tiny Mintage combined with these great Olympics made this a complete no brainer for me.

We shall see.

In 10 years can I see people saying "I need the 2016 Britannia for my collection" yes I can

Can I see people saying "I need that 2016 Olympic gold 50p!" nope

It's nothing, it's a throw away coin whatever mintage it was

Totally disagree.

I keep seeing people say I must buy this dime or Liberty with 100k Mintage, or Lunar with big Mintage. yet here I am in my own country with the opportunity to buy a coin celebrating what will all things being equal our greatest ever Olympic achievement, and there are only 306. Everybody has missed an opportunity if you ask me.

Only time will tell.

Time does tell & it has told us gold commemorative coins from previous Olympics no one cares about

Unless you can find some proof otherwise, then of course I will eat my words

On this forum you hear about every type of collectible coin, Britannia, Panda, Libertad, Lunar series, sovereigns etc etc

In 2 years I've never once seen someone mention Olympic coins

I think a few here have had the Sydney Olympic Silver set.

Oh yes I remember that set now you've prompted my memory, was it Danny collecting that? they had animals on didn't they, rather than just Olympic figures

Still, silver not gold, so much more affordable level of entry. I just looked on Ebay, you can get the whole set for less than the 50p

You said people would be looking for Britannias in 10 years, but looking back, apart from 2014, the gold proof ones generally seem to be under relative issue price.

There were just two gold Olympic 50ps on eBay this week when I looked. One at £1095 that has been ended by the seller, the other at £1250. I'll place a fair bet these will command way over premium now, something I have my doubts on this years Britannia, to put it mildly. In fact, I'll stick my neck out and say this will overtake Kew Gardens as the most sort after gold 50p.

I think it's great we all have different views though, but remember, it's the things people say don't buy that tend to be the hits. :-)

I have a 2012 Olympics coin about 1/4oz Juno I think and it has done well because I bought it used.

I don't think there is much of a precedent for 50p coins gaining much on the mint sale price.

Not many come on the market but prices seem to be spot + rather than premium.

As@kman says I can see someone needing a 2016 britannia and paying a big premium for the lowest mintage year.

If I were you. I'd buy it.

You sound like you love your sports and if you can enjoy looking at it, well that's what we all want isn't it?

As for investment, I'm not sure. Of course, for your sake, I hope it does appreciate, but we're a funny bunch us brits aren't we?

Stick a lion or a rabbit on it, BOOM!

Who cares what people think, your money, your choice. :)

I am clearly fighting a losing battle on this coin! I'll have to leave you all to your yearly Britannias & Sovereigns. :-)

I bought in at £725 ages ago on this 50p, they then put the price up. I just liked it.

Oh you never said you bought it, I was under the impression you hadn't for some reason, I would have been a bit more gentle with my dismissal of it

It is a really nice coin@richo and it is a low mintage. I am not anti it and if I had not bought the britannia set I may have bought this 50p

@Kman

I just contacted your new Somalian friend and he thinks it is a good buy for the money with lots of potential for growth.  He will be melting a few kilo bars down and try to  replicate it.

All kidding aside, it is a nice coin.  Does it have potential, possibly, but it really is a specialized collector group.  Anyway, hope you enjoy the coin cause this stuff should be fun and nothing is personal.
