Does it have to be sovereigns?, as that seems slightly at odds with your sub question below around what coins?

I tend to go 50/50 with bullion v numismatics & proofs. The former is probably the better investment 9 out of 10 times, but it's fun trying to pick the winners. This years proof 1/4 Britannia is a nice design if you wanted to mix things up against bullion sovereigns. It's nearly sold out too.

Would that be £1001 or £1999? Because, seriously, 1999 will buy you more.

Personally, I'd go for the 22K July edition although others prefer the December issue. Should have just matured by the time you are about to sell.

Never buy a March. They suck.

There was a similar thread recently

I said

"Honestly it's very tough

If it was just a situation where I had the money, had to spend it now, what would I buy, 100% sovereigns

But to get the very best out of the money, ideally you would be knowledgeable about every type of numismatic and pick out the right deals as they come along (rather than just spending all the money at once) "

Are you going to bury the sovereigns for ten years or look at them for ten years if the later buy a display case and collect sheilds or go for a single monach to give you some interest,.Dont be in a hurry to splash the cash enjoy the hunt, it is part of the fun.

Couldn't agree more. I find sovereigns really quite boring, despite the classic design.
