MS70 Silver 2oz Queens Beast MCM eBay auction

I dont think it will stay at pop 2 for long

It won't stay at 2 but almost everyone of these is below a 69.

I have 5 now and 5 on order some from the mint in capsules and some from a dealer in Germany in flips. In every case the queens portrait shows tiny scratching via contact marks.

I believe that the ones supplied in capsules are originally tubed. Perhaps only 1 in each tube of 10 will be Undamaged but maybe not even that.

If I may as, I think coin grading by commercial companys' is one of the greatest rip offs to ever hit the coin collecting world, how much does it cost to grade such a coin as shown, which to my mind should automatically be an MS 70 or 69 at worst on delivery ,or I'd send it back.

Know doubt you can now get that grade re graded by yet another commercial outfit or two to get a little green or gold sticker put on the slab.....again out of interest what sort of cost would that again incur in another premium.

I'm all for grading high end market stuff say worth £2k/3k  and upward, certainly, but for a 2oz lump of silver!!!!!!!!!!!!! seriously I just dont get it.

Not being personal at all here Numistacker and thanks for the great job you have done and are continuing to do with your youtube vids promoting this forum for instance, great job and I'm an avid viewer and Thanks....................but getting things like this graded I dont get it but am certainly open minded enough to change my mind by a rational argument but so far I've just not heard one.

Thanks

Why not Dan? You're going to always keep some so they may as well be the best you have.

I'm not into grading coins but I do 'get' the concept. If you want to hold the best standard possible, then it pays to have experts grade them for you. If it's not high enough for you, sell it and start again. It's your passion, your money and your choice. And Numi and Bosse68 will put you on their xmas card list :)

It's that stacker/collector fine line again!

I love my Sovs but I'd never grade them. I like to hold them and hide them in my spy belt.

But I would appreciate it if someone would look over them and give me an opinion. Perhaps when @sovereignsteve retires we can sit down with a couple of pints and share a packet of smoky bacon crisps? :D

I tend to agree with you for common coins like American Eagles and the 2oz beasts are pretty common unlike the 1/4oz gold which is likely to be a rarity.

I generally do not believe in grading any modern coin with a mintage above 200,000. The exception is that I like ms70 pandas even the high mintage ones.

Where I totally disagree with you is that modern bullion coins are or should be 69 or 70. I am willing to bet 95% of beasts would not hit 69 and 99.5% would not hit 70.

Pandas and Perth Lunars are an exception as they are bullion but are minted and handled to a different standard at a high premium. Royal Mint bullion is clunked together in tubes and not specially handled during production it seems. Given this it is not a bad thing to preserve the best examples for the future in slabs.

Make sure you don't touch the coins with smokey bacon fingers...

Thats fair enough Numistacker I think we are in virtually full agreement...............You mention ,and I agree totally, that Pandas and Lunars are exceptions as they are minted and handled to a better degree...........which equates to one of my own basic beefs/ rules and commandments, why cant the Royal Mint do the same???????? and thats why I never buy a damn thing from em, unless I fall in love with it aesthetically, which I rarely do anyway either...............

It is as said above a collector/stacker issue basically but to buy a Brand New UNC coin from the Royal MInt and it not be an MS69 or MS70 is a straightforward reflection of them being a poorly run operation imo..............

I don't think they quite understand what collectors of bullion need? They know investors and they know collectors .... We are hybrids...

I think it makes a lot of sense for old historic coins, like Victoria sovereigns etc, where condition can vary greatly

Modern bullion and proofs I'm with you, not sure what the point is

But, it doesn't matter what I think, if people will pay a lot for a 70 and you have one you think could grade that, the cost of getting is graded seems well worth it

Listen to the market and what they want

ps. You will find this kind of thing with most collectibles, I've been looking at pokemon cards recently, they get graded out of 10, pack fresh cards don't necessarily get a 10 and 10 is worth much more than a 9

Very true. I have quite a few graded Pokemon cards. Including some rare 10s. :-).

With a card, it does make sense, as it preserves what is a delicate item.

Way before. I have a full set of 1st edition Team Rocket graded, grades anything from 6 to 10. I can barely tell the difference between about an 8 and 10!

Got a further full set of team rocket 1st edition holos all PSA 9.

Also a few years ago I put away some sealed booster boxes of Diamond & Pearl Stromfront as frankly it's the best release of modern times (in my humble opinion). It also contains a fantastic Charizard reprint.

Also got these beauties!

I had forgotten about some of my Pokemon cards and I just checked and I have six sealed boxes of Stormfront booster boxes and I can't find a single box on eBay UK, and there is only like a handful of boxes worldwide at around $399 per box!! Wtf.

Prices do indeed seem to have gone crazy, both single cards and boxes.

I'm actually semi-retired now so have a fair bit of time on my hands, or will have, when I've finished completely renovating the kitchen!

A few pints and looking/talking about sovereigns, two of my favourite things...........Not sure about the smokey bacon crisps, got to watch the waistline you know.

Perhaps we need to resurrect the idea of the forum meet-up? I seem to remember there was talk of one about the time I joined, early last year.

Although I realise forum people tend to be a bit secretive and PM stackers/collectors, even more so.

I think you were completely mad collecting and storing such things, but hey, it seems to have paid off:)

£450 or put another way, paying an extra £420 for a 20p bit of plastic.

This is why dealers just love the mind sets of collectors. And why collectors will never ever recoup the money they spend on their collections

I paid 40 dollars for my ms70 queens

beast

I sold a bunch a sterling I bought for 40

Depends on the collectors I'd imagine.  I'm sure there are coin collectors that have seen the value of their collections increase.

Just not collectors of most modern stuff.

I disagree with this. You just need to be very careful with what you buy. I am pretty certain there is a particular coin, available right now, that will be costing double its current price in 18 months. I'll diarise this note I am so sure, but I won't publicise it as I would hate people to take my advice. As always, do your own research!

Saw one for sale at a US dealer site for 999 usd :o That's 770 quid ! Ravinella will have a stroke !

On the NGC registry, here are currently 35 MS70s  and almost 1,000 wannabe 69s

https://www.ngccoin.com/census/world/great-britain-decimal-1968-to-date/sc-350/s5pnd/?c=547344

On The PCGS Registry, there are 36 MS70s and over 1,000 wannabee 69s

http://www.pcgs.com/pop/detail.aspx?c=4044

Can you imagine if they bring a proof out of this coin ? The premiums on the MS70 and the PF70 as a two fer combo will be ridiculous.

The MS70 up on eBay from MCM 2 weeks ago eventually sold for £361 equivalent, and now there is one from Pinehurst as a BIN at $675 / £516 or best offer.  So let's not quibble and say they would accept £450.  Still going up....

A new auction from MCM for a 70 is up as well - 4 days to go

i got MS69s from Pinehurst 2 weeks ago for $100 each, and they are still offering them at that price - not a bad way/price to secure a decent example (even if it's a wannabee?).

The more I read the less inclined I am to waste my time/£  sending any QBs in for grading - mintages too high and RM quality a lottery ( as we all agree), so they can sit tight and breathe in capsules and tubes.  Of course if these start to spot we will all cry ...
