Is this gold Sovereign real?

Hi all,

could anyone help me with checking the 1973 Full Gold Sovereign - Isle of Man I've bought recently?

Specifically I am after an ultrasound test in Bullion Test application on Android phone, etc. The thing is, that the coin has the correct dimensions and weight, but the sound test does not match the other 2016 Sovereigns I have, which give a perfect response in Bullion Test app.

Now, I know that the 1973 Sovereigns from Isle of Man are not the same exact specification as the other Sovs and they are more 'yellowish', but I would be grateful if someone else with one of these coins could check it as well.

Please see the attached screenshots from Bullion Test application for the two coins.

Thanks!

I would be very surprised if a 1973 IoM sovereign of the correct size and weight wasn't genuine.

I don't know much about this type of sound testing for gold coins but perhaps the 1973 contains more silver than copper and this could account for the slight differences you are seeing?

Are you able to try an earlier year sov with more silver content to see how that pings?

Thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately, I do not have any other Sovs than 2016s.

Will post some pictures later today as I'm out of town at the moment.

As per the Bullion Test application I really recommend it as an additional test to confirm genuineness, apart from weight, dimensions and general apparance. It can verify several popular silver and gold coins - 1oz Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, Lunars, etc. The price for the app in Google's Play Store is only a couple of £ or so.

Makes you wonder how the Victorians and such like survived without modern technology to make sure their gold sovereigns were genuine.......

but they did....... sovereignScales.jpg

Am I the only one that thinks relying on a phone app to tell if a gold coin is genuine or not, is akin to reinventing the wheel.

Benefit of phone apps is they're a swiss army knife
