What was the first PM coin or bar you bought?

Recommended Posts

I'm amazed so many peoples first purchase was gold.

I'd have thought it would be silver due to price.

I'm guessing it's down to popularity between silver and gold, gold being the "standard" investment vehicle of the two.

Mine was a 1oz credit suisse gold bar, a 100oz silver JM bar and 60 x 2010 ASE. Went crazy then and purchased them all at once. And i didn't know much about PM's then. I remember gold was USD1150 and silver was USD17.50 then!

The footprint of this forum is not big enough for google yet! haha

Yes, I did a search the other day.

With the post volume we have, and the broad knowledge, it won't be long till we are right up there.

I originally thought my first coin was a 1oz gold panda.  I checked today and it is actually a Perth Mint 2004 Lunar Money.

My first silver coin is a 1kg Perth Mint 2005 Lunar Rooster (I wasn't sure of the Mint until I checked today).

Both were bought in the years they were minted.  It has been 9 years but after purchasing some coins as presents this week, I've decided I want some for myself.

I wonder if these are worth any more than current dates?

Oh man! I love that monkey coin! Why did you have to post that? I'll be selling a kidney to raise cash for one of those if I am not careful. I just checked and all I can find at quick glance is one on eBay for over £1100!!!!

Maybe I should just wait two years for the year of the monkey to come round again and get the new design then? lol

Darn it, I want one!

1992 White House commemorative silver dollar, bought from a coin dealer in Thun, Switzerland. Nice place with loads of variety, loads of circulated silver coinage from all around the globe.

I'd love to go to a place like that.

I like unusual, but not too "out there".

Only found it by chance, wandering around the city, but it was very nice place. Overpriced I suspect, but when I went back again a few years later I bought a 5 Franc piece, silver, 1925 minted in Bern. Buying it in Switzerland just added that bit more to it so was glad to pay extra.

Heh, the number of times I mention me being happy to pay extra must make me look like a right chump.

Not at all, but what you like for whatever price you are comfortable with, that's my motto.

I'd rather live by that than be one of those unfortunate to have bought large amounts in the high £twenties.

I have to admit I have got a lot more savvy with prices and where I buy for what price, but if I see something I want and I have the cash, I'll buy it.

The cost average is interesting, but I don't mind bumping that number up every now and then.

Did it with the stock horses, I'll do it again for something else.
