Two 1912 halves.

London and Sydney, I believe.

1 has a much larger diameter, but same weight.

Possible fake?

The 'Sydney' coin has very rough serrations

I was stupid, should have checked it before.

It came from a 100% seller on eBay, but months ago.

I may have to write it off, we'll see.

Thanks barney.

If it weren't for the dimensions, I'm struggling to tell if it's fake!

It is so alike to the other 1912 I have.

But it is too big and it is too thick. End of?

It's a good idea HH. I'll investigate.

For the record, I'm not upset about this. I fact I have a perverse liking for the coin!

This is one of the things that attracted me to Sovereigns in the first place...not losing money but learning a subject.

It could have been worse, it could have been a full sovereign!

Yes end of. It's a fake. the only proof you need really is size compared to real ones and the published specification.

Yes, it's a hobby now!

I want to buy more accurate scales before I continue testing.

I'm amazed that someone would counterfeit a half sov, and it really is quite convincing. I wonder when it was done?

I have some of those credit card size thingys in my wallet, but mine are in plastic. Although I actually use my old brass sovereign scale I bought last year for measuring any sovs and half sovs I buy as soon as they arrive.

@MickB Do you have a link to that Coin tester.

I remember seeing some plastic ones a while back but can't seem to find them any more.  I did have them on my watch list at one point as they would have come in handy for times when you stumble upon a coin unexpectedly.
