Girls!

I did think it was a little girly for you gentlemen.  You’ve gotta appreciate the beauty in it tho.

It is quite practical.  It’s 13inches long!! Should fit all my proofs in boxes, graded coins and my loose coins.  The top tray slots can be removed to make more room.

The marquetry and inlaid mother of pearl on the outside of that box is really nice. i cannot see the panel in the inside of the lid but the general layout appears Chinese.

No good for my silver stack, i need packing crates but the gold would fit in there nicely.

Maybe a tad girly but like you say, but practical and you can get stuff organised, unlike my ungainly Sterling Silver Cigar box that already weighed 1.2kg prior to filling it up!

It'd be great to put some Victorian sovereigns in a period box like yours @Lea79

I'd have to gather all the paraphernalia though, the scales and leather/silver sov holders too!

What is the finish on that box @richatthecroft? Lacquer?  Crossed post

It would be marvellous if it did contain all that Paraphernalia.

Your getting a bit technical for me here Roy, not sure how would I be able to tell if it has a lacquer finish?

I bought it because it looked bright and shiny and crucially was unloved and going very, very cheap on eBay on News Years Eve, close to midnight,  when I assume most people were otherwise engaged in frivolous merry making- I've being merry making since as it probably contains well over 600g of Silver! and cost me a lot less than scrap value.

See, a bit o' spit and polish and all is revealed :)

Looks good and its present content is infinitely better for you than its original product ?

I would love to get some sovereign scales.  That would be so cool.  Maybe some of the Victorian silver sovereign holders to accompany it too.  Not that I’d put sovs in them as they’d probably scratch them haha.  Oh this could get expensive ?.

Content is much nicer now in my opinion, others might disagree given, if you had the resources there are cigars that would cost more than what's in it currently!

What would be the best way to shine it up? Although I'm ambivalent of its current state, but large silver items don't look too great when tarnished, unlike old silver coins that can attract interest when left to their own devices.

Jewellers rouge may be good to shine it up :)

Today I bought a fake coin. The seller has a couple more you can see one of them here.

The reason I bought it was that having looked at the photos, it looks like an extremely well made, detailed and well finished coin. I am intrigued as to why such effort is put into making this coin?

Although the description does not provide dimensions, looking at other items he has listed some being fake 50p pieces, and using the scale of the printed paper the coins are sat on, it's about Sovereign size, but silver in colour so it's not being represented as a gold sovereign.

The descrption the seller has written states something like 'I found a bunch of these on a car boot...don't think they are legal tender....I'm putting them up for sale to find out how much they are worth' yeah, right!

I'm kind of hoping that when I Receive it, it will let itself down dramatically but having got a 2010 Bu Sovereign here with me to compare the photo to, and I acknowledge I'm only comparing my Sovereign to the photo of the fake, but the detail and definition of the fake looks infinitely better than my bu Sovereign!

I know perhaps I shouldn't encourage the selling of fake coins but my inquisitiveness got the better of me. Has anyone else seen this coin? Or have a theory of why they are produced? why all the effort taken? It must cost a fortune for someone to tool up machinery/ dies to make these?

How he's worded it is fair, and the car boot bit is believable. Then you look and all he sells is coins so yeah right indeed :P

You bought one  they make millions of the things in china i bet,so are making money :) The 50p coins people buy thinking their real,or to fill that gap as they can't afford the real one.

Gold 1 Escudos cob type (hammered coin)
King Phillip II.
Dated 1556 to 1598
Mint: Sevilla
Weight:  3.37 g
diameter:  18 mm

Already have the King Phillip II 2 Escdos & 4 Escdos (Doubloon & double Doubloon) thought I just needed the 8 Escudos to complete the set but it turns out that the 4 Escudos was the largest coin minted under King Phillip II's reign and the 8 escudos came later.

I can be satisfied I have the complete set without having to drop £8k - £18k on a 8 Escudos cob coin :)
