semi numesmatic coins

Recommended Posts

hi guys  bear with me on this one as im new and I do waffle,

had most of today and all of yesterday trying to get my head around specialist coins, or I think theyre called semi numismatic,  bear with me if I get mi facts wrong (you guys are the experts)

you tube again  and I know your probably saying  don't listen to everything on you tube craig,

but this is what im understanding

1,  theres stackers who stack  bullion , rounds ,bars, and try and get close to spot  and wait for spot to rise

2 theres stackers who pay more for special types of silver , pandas, lunar, kooks, hologram eagles, northern lights eagles, rare dates, low mintage,  etc etc

now some guys on you tube claim that the bullion route although low to buy will be low to sell back

whereas the guys collecting  more specialise coins  will benefit  when spot drops  the coins will hold their value or go higher

can anyone put me straight on this subject of silver as im just setting out with my first few hundred quid and would like to make the wisest choice,

I know you will probably thinking   what is your long term goal in pm,s

I really don't want to lose money or end up with less than I paid for an item

Treat all bullion coins as only worth their weight in silver at spot price.

If you bought Maples a couple of years ago you will have lost over 50% in value in a relatively short space of time.

Semi-numi coins will be priced at spot plus premium.

I assume you think the premium element will remain near constant so as spot drops the ratio of premium to spot will increase giving the effect that the semi-numi is holding its value. The trouble with this is it assumes there will always be a buyer willing to pay the price you expect.

With bullion you will always realise spot or close to spot and on eBay a bit more.

Therefore do you buy 2 Maples or 1 semi-numi ?

Not sure I can advise but as you are starting out I would recommend you stick to quality bullion starting with Perth Mint coins and Pandas.

Get yourself a selection of other silver coins like Maples, ASE's, Britannias, Libertads, etc. and maybe avoid all colourised coins for now.

Kookaburra, Koala and Lunar are - IMO - the most popular PM coins you can get. They have a huge selection, but those 3 are the key staple. Different designs which change year on year, they are collectable.

Kookaburras, Koalas, lunar series, kangaroos, all fit the bill as you describe above.

Stacker since 2013

Absolutely agree with all those replies, Craig.

I should just leave it there really..... but as i'm also a waffler i - er - won't.

When i started out i began with the Perth range (and still do). As my knowledge grew i added semi-numi's and bullion from other mints. It's a learning process, and your knowledge and opinions on what is "for you" will grow rapidly over a short length of time. you'll surprise yourself.

Do your own research, read plenty of articles, trawl the dealer sites, look at price trends/mintages (i love doing my homework, luckily, but i know others don't have the time), why do some series even though they seem to have all the right signs just not grab people. And believe me, this is not always a bad thing, it can sometimes take a few years for a series to become 'hot'. Have patience and trust your instincts after a while.

In short, you just cannot go wrong starting with Perth bullion. The quality of the minting, they capsule, and considering the overall quality - the premium applied over spot is very reasonable. There is no need to go further afield than european dealers either, for these.

So no VAT man turning you falsetto with a swift kick and making off with more of your hard earned cash leaving your ears ringing with his evil laugh..... This comes later when you branch out for other things  :(  .

I would caution trusting too much the opinions of others. I don't mean for that to sound odd but all collectors/stackers have arrived at their particular choices and opinions for many reasons. All opinions are valid and varied.

In the case of Perth, i think all agree they're the best start.

And if you don't have the time or energy to research elsewhere, just stick with them.

Whatever happens - DO enjoy yourself though!

I can't tell you what's right for you, but I can tell you how I stack. I also collect coins, but that's a different story. In terms of investment this is what I mainly buy:

Perth Mint kookaburra & Lunar 1oz coins (they have limited mintages)

10oz kook, koala, lunar coins (mintage is not limited but they stop minting at the end of the year and declare a final mintage)

1kg Perth Mint coins, (1 kook, 1 koala, 1 lunar each year) (possible semi numismatic as long as they don't go back and remint a load. Premiums are pretty low compared to other sizes)

Also looking to start stacking 1oz Panda coins, even though their premiums are high recent years with high premiums seem to have increased in value nicely.

The above is what I mainly buy for investment. Though I do tend to stray from the path here and there and buy other things that I just feel like buying, either for investment or for collecting.

My posts are my personal opinions, they do not constitute advice or financial advice.

I can't argue with any of the above, but do not dismiss Australia's other mint RAM, they make some stunning proofs 1oz roos in particular ,also their Bu coins are superb quality and are definitely on par with Perth mint for quality.

Once you get into the collecting side :) both Perth Mint & RAM have a very interesting back catalogue of coins some of which will no doubt appeal to you.

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

Several answers from fellow stackers already to help I trust.

When silver was twice its current price the biggest demand on eBay ( a good barometer in my opinion ) was for Kookaburras.

Margins were good and demand outstripped supply.

More recently I have noticed prices for Kangaroos have outstripped Kookaburras.

The Koala seems the least popular and all Lunar series are in demand.

I would not attempt to sell right now because prices are depressed but look out for buying opportunities.

The Perth Mint is issuing so many coins now it is getting crazy but my recommendation is to stick to Lunars and Kooks and maybe extend your collection in all sizes up to 10oz. I went as far as kilo size but much prefer the 2, 5 and 10oz.

Many coins are stunning like high relief and of course proofs but these do cost a lot more to acquire.

I paid a premium for stock horses and they are holding their prices very well but as I am not selling it doesn't matter.

Maybe start off simple with Lunars, Kooks and Koalas from half oz to 5 oz when prices are good.

The Chinese Panda is another high quality capped coin but mintages now are large so not sure how selling prices will develop for the recent years, older Pandas are expensive but there are many fakes in the market so be careful.

I kind of like American Eagles as they are a matte finish and a larger diameter.

You can handle them as marks don't show up per the mirror finish Britannia, Philharmonica etc.

Maples tend to be the lowest cost per ounce so worth buying on the dips as they will always be worth spot at least.

Premium coins can sell for less than you paid as you need to find a buyer when selling.

Extend your collection with coins from other countries when they are priced similar to Maples.

Buy the appropriate clear airtite capsules for your coins as they can look good in rimless capsules.

I think the first thing you need to do - as I said on another thread - is decide if you are a stacker or a collector.

What are you buying silver for?

Are you a coin collector?

Are you only interested in making profit as quick as you can?

If you don't know what you are you can't decide what to buy. I think this is why you are here asking us what to buy. But we don't know what you are either. We can only give you advice based on our own philosophy.

You just need to make your decision. Many on here have come down on the Collector/investor side of things. Don't want to pay too much over spot (An eye on the investment side) but want to collect some good looking coins that appeal to them. (The collector side)

So.... What are you? Why do you want to buy silver? As soon as you answer this clearly to yourself, you will know exactly what you what to buy with your first hundred quid.

My advice would be to look at the Perth Mint coins and order some from sellers on this site (You know you can trust them, and the price will be good) See how they feel in your hand! Choose the ones you like the best based on design. You won't loose out unless you sell after the market falls, and you will have some lovely coins.

Keep reading. You already know so much more than last week. Proof coins, BU coins, bullion, numismatics, stacking close to spot..... all stuff you learned in the last week. Keep it up. Worry less, buy more! :D
