VW naughtiness might be good for Pd

There had already been some sentiment in favour of switching from diesel to petrol earlier this year. If VW's antics mean that it is much harder for manufacturers to meet emission standards for diesel than previously supposed, this could accelerate the move. More petrol engine cars means bigger demand for Pd. Of course, it depends on global demand for cars generally, and whether the Russians are still destocking.

"When bailout-darling GM 'fessed up to an intentional ignition-switch defect, tied to at least 174 deaths, The Justice Department fined them $900 million (and no employees faced criminal charges). So, in this consequence-less world in which we live, when Volkswagen admits to literally cheating emissions-standards tests, it faces up to $18 billion in fines from The EPA, one has to wonder whether "we" have our priorities right?"

The world has gone nuts.

I think it might be good for Platinum and Palladium..

http://www.fin24.com/Companies/Mining/Platinum-in-pain-as-Volkswagen-uproar-may-hurt-diesel-demand-20150925

If you think about it,

  1. Some people will move away from diesel to gas (Good for Palladium)
  2. Volkswagen - Now needs to increase Platinum usage (in Diesel Cars) to meet emission standards - Other Diesel Manufacturers *who cheat* might also fix it (Good for Platinum)
  3. If Volkswagen has to replace the Catalytic Converter on 11 Million Cars that creates a one time demand of 2 Million ounces they need to buy to correct the issue. (Good for platinum)
  4. Old Converters will be recycled - So some or a lessor amount will be recovered (Bad for Platinum)

It's hard to say - If this will have any affect on pricing.

Anyway - Platinum is a better catalyst in both gas and diesel engines (Palladium is only used in gas, due to a cheaper cost)  So platinum should always retain a premium to Palladium - How much of a premium is anyone's guess. I guess it really depends on how many grams of platinum vs how many grams of Palladium is needed to produce the same effect.
