You may as well only buy coins like that if you have a particular interest in owning it as it's not going to have as much demand as a sovereign on the secondary market, which is a main concern if it's a purchase directly as an investment in gold. If you want a more numismatic sovereign then you may as well buy older sovereigns IMO.

 

I like older awkward gold coins, but would rather pick an older sovereign than that if I had the choice myself.

I think it depends on your budget, i have two half sov's and they are great would have no qualm's buying more, sov's are so recognizable for resale bullion i think they are a must in a stack.

If you are stacking then sovereigns are a good way to go.  But if you are like most gold coin collectors  a good selection of coins are always nice to look at. I would consider the following to start. Obviously at the right price 

 

Sovereigns  

Ducat  (from various countries mostly European )

Florin

Peso (Chile,Mexico)

Kronen
