Just an update. UPS have a declaration form you have to fill to confirm you are purchasing investment gold. It's got the agreed criteria, which is around the .900 fineness and above and also face value. Looks like if you fill that in, and it clearly relates to your invoice, then no duty. Therefore, to me it doesn't seem too bad buying gold from the US. Of course silver and platinum you would get hit as it doesn't have the same exclusion. It's my first ever order from Apmex, but up to now it seems all ok.

Wouldn't you have to watch putting collectable gold coins down as the description?  I thought it was only more or less bullion that was tax/duty free and numismatics with value a certain amount over bullion incurred taxes?  I also seem to remember something about the coins having to have been currency at some point so that would rule out medallions/rounds iirc.

I may not be recalling this correctly.

Hi,

I spoke to UPS, depends on the gold content and value. It's a very specific description and there is a deceleration to fill out. If you meet the description on the deceleration it's no duty. I am happy to attach the form here if it will help people and I can work out how to do it.

I still haven't taken delivery though, so won't know for certain on charges until then. I didn't check on VAT, but for customs it seems pretty clear based on the form around investment gold coins and what the criteria is.

Hope this helps.
