Not so sure, old sterling silver coins in mint condition have an amazing colour and lustre to them, gold can't compete.

 

On reflection, though, the sight of a perfect Vicky sovereign comes close. It would have to a proof in gold to reveal the level of detail in that coin.

Over 3 thou for a E/F , wonder if I could blag it with the missus, tell her it only cost a few hundred :)

I saw a nice one go for under a grand a few weeks ago at auction, it was advertised as EF and looked it on the photo I saw.

I thought about it but managed to stop myself as I probably couldn't have afforded it and the missus was with me anyway!

very nice obverse as you say but it's well overpriced considering the wear on the reverse.
