Where youll be at when you come to retire

I've just been doing some calculations, now i have been at this stacking malarky a while to see where i would be at if i continue to stack at the same rate.  Got to say I am pleasantly surprised

Below is the template i used for my own stacking goals

Ive got an hour while on the train here to get my pad & calculator out and see whats, what.

Change the bolded figures for your own and see where youll be at 65 if you continue at your same rate

'Joe Soap' is 37 and has been stacking precious metals since October 2010 up to now January 2015

4years and 3 months =  51 months

He is mixed across physical gold he holds, physical silver he holds, and has a online account with goldmoney for allocated bullion

His current totals are

a/He has 1222oz PHYSICAL SILVER have been accumulated since October 2010

b/ He has 514g PHYSICAL GOLD have been accumulated since October 2010

c/ He has 1300oz ALLOCATED BULLION have been accumulated since October 2010

a/ 1222oz dived by 51 months stacking = 23.97 oz per month x (12) = 288oz per year

b/ 514g dived by 51 months stacking = 10.07g per month x (12) = 121g per year

c/ 1300oz dived by 51 months stacking = 25.49oz per month x (12) = 306oz per year

(I have rounded each oz up to the nearest single figure for simplicity)

Add these yearly and look at the results of what you get at 65

The joy of numbers !!

9,564oz of physical silver and just over 4kg of gold

9500oz would be x19 monster boxes or if lighthouse capsules were 0.50p each it would costs you £4,782 in capsules for them all !

and would weight just under 300kg or a 1/3 of a ton of silver !

The figures give food for thought as to what you should do and reevaluating, shows advantages of allocated storage, .

Whilst it is not an ideal set of figures above, children come along marriages and divorces come along, new jobs bring more income, business fails on you the list is endless.

To a youngster reading this

Even a simple case.

Buying a single full sovereign a month from 18 until you retire you would have

65years -18 = 47 years X 12 months in a year = 564 coins you would have come to retirement.

Current value of a full sovereign @ say £195 =  £109,980 you have got for your retirement by just that one little monthly commitment

Feel free to do your own calculations and share where you'll be at yourself

It's interesting to contemplate but I think it's very pie in the sky

Who knows what will happen with PM prices over decades, they might rocket up for a few years, they might dip very low for a period; hopefully we will be savvy buying/selling/holding accordingly, but predicting a steady spending & accumulation seems impossible.

195*12=£2340

Not sure if many 18 year olds could afford that, but buying one every other month maybe thats around £20 a week.

Imagine your wife moaning about storing all that silver I bet it would go like this ' we need more space' :(

Not sure if I can see myself stacking for so long. I'm just in it at the moment, for a couple of years or so to get a significant stack for my humble means then hopefully forget about stacking for a long while but have a nice bit of sercurity stashed away.

Pretty much the same here, but I doubt I'll stop collecting.

Only time will tell.

I think in some capacity i will always stack, but i think it is depicted by cost. I have bought high and low so over a life time it will even out. When i was a young man i collected sovereigns but they got sold.If i had kept going like the original post i would be sitting pretty right now.

I will stack as long as my finances will allow, goals I would like to be at or around 5000 ozs (Currently just shy of 2k), of silver, and a couple of kilos of gold, (currently 24.6 ozs).

5000 ozs would be split 2500 for myself and the rest between the two granddaughters.

2kg of gold well that is easy its for the wife.

Like Keith, although I don't think I would ever get past 1500 oz of silver ever in my lifetime.

Silver is a bit of insurance, gold is the wealth store.

Currently stacking 1/4 oz (22ct) and Sovs.

Oh Paul, just to screw with your figures a wee bit. If Joe Soap is 37, then I'm afraid he won't be retiring and collecting his pension at 65. Thanks to the new gov rules he will be closer to 68 years old before he can get the bus pass. So three more years of stacking. :)

  • 1 month later...

I'm upping my pension contribution by 1% a year now and have done for a couple of years - I don't seem to miss it when I raise it gradually.

I'm also stacking silver and gold towards my target of 520oz silver and 10oz gold - that gives me 1oz of silver to sell every week for 10 years, and an ounce of gold to cover Christmas for 10 years.

That's my plan anyway, hopefully I'll be able to diversify into other things that will hopefully appreciate in the next 30 years.
