There were 3 gold plated DMC-12s made by DMC, commissioned by American Express - who perhaps rather naively thought they could sell a hundred of them, asking nearly $60k more than the standard car's price. There was also a fourth, created as a home-made project (I admit, I did think of Flutters doing something like this when I read about it) by a guy from New York.

This does mean they are pretty rare Garthy, but hopefully this doubles your chance to get one, or, if you know a willing chemistry expert, get a standard one and plate it yourself.

I remember seeing a documentary on the Delorean, amazing story if quite unbelievable, an American business man that went to the British government for a loan in the late 70's, I think He managed to get something like £70 million out of them, that's probably something like £250 million in todays money,  He set the plant up in Northern Ireland and designed and built the car, quite an achievement.

I believe it was Thatcher that put the final nail in the coffin by refusing to loan more money, can't say I blame Her, Delorean himself ended up being accused of pocketing some of the loan and also laundering drugs, He said He was set up, who knows?

Still considering the car was designed and built around 1980 it's a pretty impressive design, I've seen one drive around my way from time to time and it turns more heads that any other car I know.

I didn't get the gold plated one for Christmas :( maybe next year.
